The AT-V04 was part of Akai’s V-series component lineup introduced around 1980, designed to complement their matching amplifiers and cassette decks. What sets it apart from basic digital tuners of its era is the combination of a digital frequency display with a traditional analog tuning knob, letting you search in precise 0.05 MHz FM increments or 1 kHz AM increments — an unusually fine step size that makes it a capable AM DX receiver as well as an everyday FM tuner. Seven station presets for both FM and AM allow quick recall of favourite stations. Auto-scan and manual search modes are both on board.

The AT-V04 features separate local/distance sensitivity switches for both FM and AM, a genuinely useful feature when dealing with strong local transmitters or weak distant signals. Multiple FM antenna inputs (300 ohm balanced, 75 ohm unbalanced) give flexibility for antenna setups. A rear-panel output level adjustment allows the user to match output to their amplifier’s sensitivity. The fluorescent display is clear and easy to read.
