A Marantz Model 104 tuner in excellent cosmetic condition, made in Japan, and one we know the history of because we sold it ourselves.
Where This One Came From
This tuner left here earlier this year and has come back to us through our Perpetual Trade-Back Program. That is worth saying plainly: we know what it was when it went out, we know how it has been treated, and we have put it back through our bench before offering it again. Very little used equipment comes with that.
The Model 104 in the Range
The Model 104 was the accessible end of Marantz’s tuner range in 1976, and it was built the way the expensive ones were. Three-gang tuning on FM and two-gang on AM, ceramic filters in the IF stages, a proper flywheel-weighted tuning knob, and the blue dial illumination that people recognise across a room. Marantz built it in Japan between 1976 and 1978.
The Numbers
On the numbers: FM sensitivity is 2.5 µV, selectivity 48 dB, signal-to-noise 58 dB and distortion 0.7% on FM stereo. AM sensitivity is 25 µV. Those are honest figures for a tuner at this level and they translate into what actually matters — it locks onto a station and stays there, separates neighbours on a crowded dial, and stays quiet between them.
Cosmetics
The cosmetics are the reason this one is worth attention. The silver faceplate is exceptionally clean, the dial glass is clear, and the blue lighting is even across the whole dial with no dead sections. Every knob and switch is present and moves properly, without scratchiness or slop. Tuners of this age usually show their fifty years on the faceplate and in the lighting; this one does not.
Tested Here
It has been tested here across both bands and performs as it should — clean FM with good stereo separation, responsive AM, and all lighting, meters and indicators working.
Why an Analogue Tuner
There is a real pleasure in an analogue tuner that a digital one cannot give you: the slow sweep across the band, the needle settling, the stereo light coming on. This is a good example of it in a condition that lets you enjoy the looking as well as the listening.

A digital synthesiser tuner with a traditional analog knob, stepping in 0.05 MHz on FM and 1 kHz on AM — fine enough that it works as an AM DX receiver and not only an FM tuner. An analog tuner from 1980 in a chassis 50mm tall — two inches, which is about as thin as a full-width component gets. Needle-pointer dial with a printed scale, an AM/FM selector, a single RCA output, and nothing else. Tuning engages smoothly across both bands and the output is clean. Condition good, with a clean front bezel and honest age on a 45-year-old component.
