Tannoy Mercury mX1 Bookshelf Speakers — Dark Oak, Port Bungs

$195.00

A 25mm soft dome over a 130mm ceramic-coated paper cone, 87dB into 8 ohms, rated 10 to 100 watts, on five-way binding posts. The removable port bungs are the reason to buy them — in, and the cabinet runs sealed and tight against a wall; out, and the bass extends for stand duty in the room. Dark oak with black drivers and matching grilles. Both graded very good.

Description

Tannoy Mercury mX1 Two-Way Bookshelf Speakers — 25mm Soft Dome, 130mm Ceramic-Coated Driver, Removable Port Bungs, Dark Oak

A compact two-way bookshelf pair in dark oak with black drivers and matching black grilles, in very good condition throughout.

The mX1 Design

The mX1 is Tannoy’s compact two-way: a 25 mm soft dome tweeter over a 130 mm bass driver with a ceramic-coated paper cone, in a rear-ported cabinet. The ceramic coating stiffens a paper cone without adding much mass, which is the reason a driver this size stays clean where a plain paper cone would soften. It is a small speaker that does not sound like an apology for one.

Removable Port Bungs

The removable port bungs are the feature worth buying these for. Leave them in and the cabinet behaves as a sealed box: tighter, drier, more controlled, and far happier sitting close to a wall or in a bookshelf where a rear port would otherwise turn the bass thick. Take them out and the port opens up, and the low end extends and gains weight for a speaker sitting out in the room on stands. Most speakers make you choose that once, at the factory. These let you decide it in your own room, in about four seconds, and change your mind later.

Amplifier Matching

They are undemanding to drive. Sensitivity is 87 dB into a straightforward 8 ohm load, rated from 10 watts to 100, so a modest integrated amplifier or a vintage receiver runs them properly.

Terminals

The five-way binding posts take banana plugs, spades or bare wire, which is more than most speakers this size offer.

Cabinets and Finish

The cosmetics are worth a mention. The cabinets are dark oak, and the drivers themselves are black to match the grilles, so with the grilles off the front baffle reads as a single dark face rather than the usual contrast. Both speakers grade very good and have been tested here to confirm they perform as originally designed, which every pair we sell goes through.

What Owners Say

Owners rate the mX1 4.8 out of 5 across 23 reviews on AudioReview, and Tannoy’s reputation for smooth treble and unfussy imaging is most of the reason why. It is also one of the models we sell most consistently.

Where These Suit

At 11.7 inches tall and 8.8 pounds each, these suit a bookshelf, a desk, a second system, or rear duty in a home theatre.

A well-reviewed compact Tannoy two-way in dark oak, with the rare luxury of choosing whether it runs sealed or ported.
