Boston Acoustics was founded in 1979 in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, by Andy Kotsatos and Frank Reed, two veterans of KLH and Advent. We carry Boston Acoustics bookshelf speakers, towers, centre channels, surrounds and subwoofers. We've had more than 30 Boston Acoustics listings so far. Every used Boston Acoustics here is inspected, tested and serviced as required, then photographed in-house and covered by our Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty and Perpetual Trade-Back Program. The Boston Acoustics models we've sold most often include the MCS 160 subwoofer, the VR1 tower, the HD7 and HD8 bookshelf speakers and the VRC centre.
The Boston Acoustics story
Andy Kotsatos and Frank Reed met at KLH in 1968 and spent nearly a decade at Advent, where Kotsatos worked on speaker design, including the Advent Loudspeaker. They left in 1978 and founded Boston Acoustics in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, the next year, aiming for good speakers at competitive prices, sold through independent dealers.
Growth. The company went public in 1986, moved to a larger plant in Peabody, Massachusetts, in 1995, and bought Snell Acoustics in 1996. Its premium line was named Lynnfield, after its home town.
Owners. By 2017 Boston Acoustics was part of D+M Group, the Denon and Marantz company, which Sound United bought that year. In September 2025 HARMAN, owned by Samsung, bought Sound United, and today the brand appears mainly in licensed car and marine audio.
Which Boston Acoustics is which?
Lynnfield (premium): the VR-M family, including the VR-M50 monitor, VR-M80 tower and VR-MX surround.
VR series (2004): the VR1, VR2 and VR3 towers, the VRB bookshelf speaker, the VRC centre and the VRX surround.
HD series: such as the HD7 and HD8.
PowerVent subwoofers (1999): the PV400, PV600 and PV800.
Classic Series and home theatre systems (2007 to 2011): such as the CS 23 II, the Horizon MCS systems and the MCS 160.
Buying used Boston Acoustics: what to check
PowerVent subwoofers. Some switch on with a signal and off after 15 minutes without one, so a "dead" sub may just be asleep. Keep the rear heat sinks clear.
VR towers. Check that the carpet spikes come with VR2 and VR3 towers, and keep the backs at least 3 inches from the wall.
Matched sets. The VRC centre and VRX surrounds are voiced to match the VR towers, so they work best together.
Drivers. Inspect every surround and play every tweeter, as with any speaker of this age.

JVC SX-PW33 Slim Tower Subwoofer — 6.5in, 100W, High-Pass Out
A tall, narrow bass column meant to stand beside a cabinet rather than in front of it — 8.25 inches across the front and unusually deep at 17, which is the trade: the depth buys back the internal volume the narrow baffle gives away, so a 6.5 inch woofer is properly loaded in a strip of floor barely wider than a hardcover book. Driven by an integrated 100 watt amplifier, with speaker-level inputs and high-pass outputs so it works with an amplifier that has no subwoofer output at all. Good condition.
