Made in Ottawa. Not Canada generally — Ottawa specifically, a short drive from where they are now for sale.

Camber is one of the genuinely local stories in Canadian audio, and one most people have never heard. The company held the Rega licence for Canada, and by the early eighties was building loudspeakers here in Ottawa — including models sold under the Rega name once production moved over from the UK. As interest grew beyond Canada the licence became a constraint, so the name changed to Rega Camber and then simply Camber. The company was later sold to a Montreal firm and became Plateau. The Laser series was Camber’s own, developed with the measurement rigour Ottawa manufacturers had unusual access to, the National Research Council’s anechoic chambers being right here in the city.

What came out of that is a speaker with no obvious vices. Camber’s reputation is for a clean, uncoloured, musical presentation rather than a flattering one — enthusiasts of the era put them in the same conversation as the Energy 22, which is high company for a brand this quietly forgotten.

Take the grilles off and there is more to look at than you would expect. The 6.5-inch Audax mid-bass runs a translucent polypropylene cone, which catches light in a way no modern black cone does, and each driver sits in a light grey bezel set against the dark cabinet. It is a deliberate two-tone treatment, and it looks considerably more expensive than these were. The one-inch dome tweeter carries a diffusor at its centre to spread the top end more evenly across the room rather than beaming it at one chair.

The cabinet is a two-way bass reflex design with the port on the rear, so give them a few inches of breathing room from the wall rather than pushing them hard against it. On a pair of stands at ear height they will reward you.

They are also an easy load. At 8 ohms nominal and rated from 10 to 100 watts, they suit a modest vintage receiver as happily as a modern integrated, which is exactly the flexibility you want in a bookshelf speaker at this price.

Connection is via spring clips on the rear panel.
