A pair of Castle Knight 1 standmount speakers in cherry, from a company that spent forty years being known for one thing above all others: cabinets.

Castle Acoustics

Castle Acoustics was founded in Yorkshire in the early 1970s and built its name on woodwork at a level the rest of the industry treated as optional. The Knight series carried that forward, and the way these cabinets are finished is not marketing language for a vinyl wrap. The veneers are deep-figured slices cut from real timber rather than reconstituted board. Each pair is book-matched — the veneer sheets are mirrored across the two cabinets so the grain runs symmetrically when the speakers are set up as a pair — then sealed and waxed by hand over a process taking more than five days. It is the reason no two pairs of Castles look quite the same, and it is why these still read as furniture two decades on rather than as black boxes that have aged.

The Veneer

Cherry was one of eight veneers offered at launch, alongside black oak, natural oak, antique oak, maple, rosewood, walnut and mahogany. Castle trimmed that list to seven and later to five, and cherry survived every cut — which tells you which ones people actually bought. In a warm room it is the finish that does not read as audio equipment at all.

The Design

Underneath the woodwork is an honest two-way bass-reflex design. The 130 mm bass/mid driver uses a natural-fibre woven cone rather than a moulded plastic one, paired with a 25 mm textile soft-dome tweeter — a combination chosen for an even, unforced character rather than for a specification sheet. The port fires from the rear panel through a flared, damped mouth, and the crossover sits at 3 kHz with bass tuning down to 55 Hz. The rear panel carries four gold-plated binding posts rather than two, so these can be bi-wired or bi-amped if your amplifier supports it — and the factory link bars are still fitted, which sounds trivial until you buy a used bi-wire speaker without them and discover they are a model-specific part nobody stocks. Nothing needs to be sourced here to make these play.

Driving Them

Sensitivity is 88 dB for one watt at one metre into a nominal 8 ohm load, with power handling to 100 watts. That is a genuinely easy speaker to drive. An 8 ohm load with no awkward dips is the friendliest thing you can present to a modest integrated amplifier or a vintage receiver, and 88 dB means you are not asking it for much in the first place. These do not need an expensive amplifier to sound like themselves, which was rather the point of the range.

What the Label Says

One thing stated plainly, because the badge invites a question. The rear label reads “Designed and engineered in England — International Audio Group, Huntingdon” and, separately, “Made in China.” Castle was a British marque acquired by IAG, and the Knight series was engineered in England and built overseas. The cabinet work is the same cabinet work either way, and the veneer on these is the evidence, but we would rather tell you what the label says than let you find it yourself.

What It Cost New

The Knight 1 sold for £299.95 per pair when it launched in 2010, sitting at the entry point of a five-model range that ran to £999.95.
