The largest bookshelf speaker in Polk’s RTi range, in real black oak veneer, and built to a standard the price never suggested.
Dynamic Balance Drivers
The driver work is where Polk put the money. The 6.5-inch mid/bass cone is a polymer composite on butyl rubber surrounds, developed under the Dynamic Balance programme — Polk used laser interferometry to watch a cone flex in real time and then chose materials and geometry that push the resonances out of the audible band rather than damping them afterwards. Above it sits a 1-inch silk and polymer dome on a neodymium magnet, heat-sinked so it holds up under sustained level rather than compressing when the evening gets going.
The Twin Ports
There are two ports, not one. A conventional vent sits on the front baffle below the woofer, and Polk’s Power Port fires from the rear through a cone-shaped diffuser that spreads the air rather than letting it exit as a column. The second port is the ARC vent, which Polk fits to clean up the midrange rather than to extend the bass. The practical result is a bookshelf speaker that reaches 50 Hz honestly, which is genuinely low for a cabinet this size and enough that many rooms will not want a subwoofer at all.
Cabinet and Real Wood Veneer
The cabinet is all-MDF with extensive internal bracing, and the grilles float on their mounts to keep the frame from adding diffraction of its own. Inside the crossover, Mylar bypass capacitors sit across the main parts to sharpen the top end. Small choices, and not ones usually made at this level.
Connections
Connection is through dual gold-plated five-way binding posts, so these can be bi-wired or bi-amped if you want to, and simply strapped and driven normally if you do not. The posts take bare wire, spades, pins or bananas.
Amplifier Matching
At 89 dB sensitivity into 8 ohms and rated to 125 watts, they are undemanding to drive and will take a serious amplifier if you have one. They are magnetically shielded, so they can sit either side of a television without disturbing the picture, and there is a keyhole slot on the back for wall mounting.
Measure Your Shelf First
One measurement worth noting before you buy: these are over 14 inches deep. That is a real bookshelf speaker rather than a compact monitor, and a shallow shelf will not take one.

Built in Ottawa, a short drive from where they now sit. A 6.5-inch Audax mid-bass on a translucent polypropylene cone and a 1-inch dome with a centre diffusor, in light grey bezels against a dark cabinet. Two-way rear-ported, 8 ohms, 10 to 100 watts, spring clips on the back — give them room off the wall. Grilles included; very good condition.
Paradigm Monitor 3 v3 Bookshelf Speakers – 8″ Woofer, Canada
An 8-inch woofer in a cabinet small enough to sit on a stand — a 210 mm ICP cone on a die-cast chassis, with a third-generation titanium dome on the Studio-series waveguide faceplate, crossed at 2.0 kHz. Low frequency extension to 38 Hz and 91 dB room sensitivity, so 15 watts drives them and 150 is just headroom. Built in Canada, in Black Ash. Very good condition.

MartinLogan Motion 15 Bookshelf Speakers – Folded Motion, Boxed
The reason to want these is the tweeter — MartinLogan's Folded Motion driver is a pleated ribbon rather than a dome, so it squeezes air out from between its pleats and barely has to move. A 5.25-inch aluminium cone below it, 92 dB sensitivity, and the high-gloss black clean of the swirls these show so readily. Original boxes included.
JBL 62T Bookshelf Speakers – Rosewood Finish, Titanium Dome
Discounted for the aftermarket screw holes a previous owner left in the back panels, and very good everywhere else — original drivers, clean rosewood finish, both tested here. A mid-1980s two-way with a pure titanium tweeter that runs out to 23 kHz, and an easy 89 dB load that a thirty-watt vintage receiver drives properly.

Two things to tell you: a ding on the top side edge of one cabinet, and third-party binding posts a previous owner fitted to one speaker. Otherwise good — and the design is the interesting part, since Mission's inverted geometry puts the tweeter below the woofer to bring the two into step at seated ear height. Made in England.
Energy Connoisseur CB-10 Bookshelf Speakers — 90dB, 125W
Energy's Convergent Source Module puts the 1-inch hyperbolic aluminium dome and the 5.5-inch poly woofer close enough together to behave as a single source, which is why these set up easily and sound right from more than one seat. Crossed at 2.8 kHz, rear-ported through a port two inches across, 90 dB, rated 20 to 125 watts. Graded Very Good. The original grilles are not included.
