JVC RX-307 Stereo Receiver — 80 WPC, Original Remote & Manual

Eighty watts a side, a proper phono input, and the two things these almost never come with any more: the original remote and the printed manual.

That matters more than it sounds. A receiver from this era without its handset is a receiver you operate by walking across the room, because the remote controls functions that have no front-panel equivalent on most units of the period. Third-party replacements are a lottery. This one has the correct JVC RM-SR307U, and the manual that tells you what every button does.

The RX-307 comes from 1991, when JVC was building receivers with digitally synthesized tuning and real power supplies behind the badge. Eighty watts per channel into 8 ohms, and JVC rated that honestly — both channels driven, 40 hertz to 20 kilohertz, at under 0.03% distortion, which is a stricter way of quoting power than most of its competitors used. The amplifier is happy with anything from 8 to 16 ohms.

It is better equipped than the price suggests. Volume is motor-driven, so the remote turns the actual knob rather than working around it. There are two full tape loops with dubbing between them, two switchable speaker pairs, a surround mode, a headphone socket, and a switched AC outlet on the back for a turntable or a deck.

The tuner is a digital synthesizer design covering FM and AM, with ten presets, auto memory and an FM mode mute, read off a multi-function fluorescent display rather than an analogue dial. There is a moving-magnet phono input, so a turntable connects directly without a separate preamplifier — increasingly the deciding feature on a receiver of this age, and one that later models quietly dropped.

Round the back it carries COMPU LINK-3 Synchro, JVC’s system-control bus. With other COMPU LINK components the receiver switches sources and starts transports automatically, and the front panel wears the COMPU LINK Remote III badge to match.

The finish is black, and at just over seventeen inches wide and five high it sits neatly on a shelf without dominating it.
