A two-channel Yamaha receiver from the R-S series, 50 watts a side, with a proper moving-magnet phono stage, a subwoofer output and switching for two pairs of speakers.

There is a particular problem this receiver solves better than almost anything else at the price. Someone has a turntable, or is about to buy one, and wants a real system rather than a powered-speaker compromise — and every modern receiver at the money is a five-channel home theatre box with a menu system, six HDMI inputs and no phono input at all. The R-S300 is the opposite of that. Two channels, a volume knob, bass and treble, and a phono stage that works.

That phono stage is the reason to care. It is a genuine moving-magnet input rated at 87 decibels signal-to-noise, not the afterthought circuit that turns up on budget gear, and it means a turntable connects directly with no outboard preamplifier and no extra box on the shelf.

The amplifier behind it is better specified than the modest wattage suggests. Yamaha rates 50 watts per channel across the full band at 0.04 percent distortion, but the dynamic power figures tell the more useful story: 70 watts into 8 ohms, 89 into 4, and 100 into 2. That is an amplifier with current in reserve, and the damping factor of 150 reflects the same thing — it grips a woofer rather than letting it ring. It is rated for 4-ohm loads, so it is not fussy about what you connect to it.

Pure Direct is the switch worth knowing about. It takes the tone controls, the balance control and the loudness circuit out of the signal path entirely, leaving the shortest route from input to output. With it engaged the response runs from 10 hertz to 100 kilohertz within a single decibel, and signal-to-noise measures 100 decibels.

The rest is sensible rather than showy. Forty AM and FM presets. A mono subwoofer output, so a powered sub can be added later without replacing anything. Binding posts rather than spring clips, and front-panel switching between two pairs of speakers — useful if you want a second pair in another room, or simply want to compare. A headphone jack, a sleep timer, and an auto-standby that shuts the receiver down after a set number of hours. The front panel is extruded aluminum, and the chassis uses Yamaha’s ART Base construction, which braces the whole assembly against its own vibration.

It sold new for $499 in Canada in 2010 — around $740 in 2026 Canadian dollars.

Condition is Very Good, and it has been tested and confirmed working properly across all inputs and both speaker channels. It comes with a brand new genuine Yamaha RAX23 remote control — worth saying plainly, because a great many of these turn up without one, and the remote is what gets used for input switching and volume from a chair.
