The SH96TA-W is a purpose-built passive subwoofer designed by LG for use with the matching SH96TA receiver / home-theatre system. The forward-firing driver and front-firing port keep all of the sub’s acoustic output aimed at the listening area, which is genuinely useful in real-world rooms where rear-ported subs are constrained by wall placement and interaction with room boundaries. The front-ported design also makes the sub considerably more flexible in placement: it can be backed up against a wall, slotted into a TV cabinet cubby, or placed inside an entertainment unit without the bass-reflex tuning being disrupted by nearby surfaces.
Compatibility note (important and useful): the SH96TA-W is rated for a 3-ohm load and is designed to be driven by the dedicated passive-subwoofer speaker-level output of the matching LG receiver. The 3-ohm passive-sub interface is a widely shared HTIB (home-theatre-in-a-box) standard — variants of it appear on many home-theatre systems from LG, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Pioneer, JVC, Philips, and others, all of which use a dedicated low-impedance passive-sub output rather than a line-level RCA sub-out.
