A beautifully restored example of one of the most beloved and collectible receivers in the classic Marantz 22xx series, the Model 2225 is a sought-after vintage gem made in Japan, in very good condition and working beautifully.
The Marantz 2225 occupies a special place in the 22xx family — often described by enthusiasts as one of the best-kept secrets in the entire lineup. Don’t let the 25 watts per channel rating mislead you: the 2225 was one of Marantz’s first lower-powered receivers to use a dual-rail direct-coupled design rather than a single-rail cap-coupled circuit, and the difference is audible — delivering powerful, well-controlled bass, smooth detailed mids, and clear extended treble that consistently exceeds expectations for its rated output. Forum veterans frequently note that the 2225 drives demanding speakers more effectively than some higher-powered receivers of the era, and it has earned a devoted following among collectors and listeners alike. The 2225’s build quality is everything you’d expect from Marantz’s golden era: a tank-built chassis, quality components, and that iconic soft blue dial lighting that remains one of the most visually captivating designs in vintage audio.
This example has undergone our Level One service and testing which should ensure many more years of reliable performance ahead. The unit has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out, all pots and switches cleaned for silent, smooth operation, lamps replaced for that classic blue glow, and bias and DC offset checked and adjusted to spec — it is performing exactly as it should and sounds wonderful.
Connections include a Moving Magnet phono input with ground terminal for turntable use, Aux and Tape inputs with full tape monitor loop, FM and AM tuner with both 75 ohm and 300 ohm antenna connections, and two pairs of speaker outputs for A/B switching. The tone control section offers rotary Bass, Mid, and Treble controls alongside a slider balance control and Loudness compensation — a more flexible EQ section than many of its contemporaries. A 6.35 mm headphone jack on the front panel rounds out the connection options. A soft copy of the owner’s manual in PDF is included.
This model — and the entire 22xx series — continues to climb steadily in value, making a well-serviced example an excellent long-term investment as well as a joy to use daily.
