Marantz WC-1 Wood Case – Fits 1200, 1250, 120 and More

The Marantz WC-1 wood case, in good condition, that turns a bare 1200 or 120-series chassis back into a piece of furniture.

What it is

Marantz sold many of its components as a bare chassis and let you buy the wood case separately, which is why so many good Marantz pieces sit on a shelf looking unfinished today. The WC-1 is the case for the full-width Marantz faceplate: the Model 1200 integrated amplifier, the 1120, 1150 and 1250, the 120 and 125 tuners, and the 10B, 20 and 23.

It is a wood-veneered sleeve over a particleboard core, the way cases of that era were built. The veneer has the warm, reddish tone and fine grain of cherry, though after fifty years we cannot say for certain which wood it is. It has a black perforated metal panel set into the top to let the heat out, a wide framed opening at the front for the faceplate, and a recess along each side of the base. The space around the chassis is deliberate: it is the cooling path for amplifiers like the 1200, which carry their heat sinks along the sides.

On the 1200 it mounts with four screws through the corners of the faceplate into the front frame. The case ships unmounted, packed on its own, and goes on in a few minutes.

Condition

Good. The veneer shows its age, with light surface scratches on the top and a few small nicks along the front edges, as the photographs show. The chips it has are on the underside, where they do not show once a component is inside. The case is structurally sound and the top panel sits flat.
