Marantz WC-10 Walnut Cabinet – Fits 1070, 1060, 112 and More

The original Marantz wood case for the slim-chassis components, and we have two of them.

What it is

Marantz sold its separates as bare chassis and let you buy the cabinet afterwards, which is why so many otherwise lovely 1060s and 112s sit on a shelf looking half-finished. The WC-10 is the case those components were designed to wear.

It fits a long list of them: the 104, 105, 105-B, 110 and 112 tuners, the 1030, 1040, 1060 and 1070 integrated amplifiers, the 140, the 3200 preamplifier, the 2010 and 2015 receivers, and the 4060, 4070 and 4220. If you have a slim-chassis Marantz of that era sitting bare, this is almost certainly the case for it.

The effect on a component is not subtle. A bare Marantz chassis reads as equipment. The same chassis in its wood case reads as furniture, and the blue-lit dial suddenly has something to sit in rather than float above.

What they are actually made of

Worth being straight about this. These are not walnut veneer. They are a walnut-grain vinyl over a solid core — very solidly built, heavier and stiffer than you expect when you pick one up, but a clad finish rather than real wood.

The practical consequence is a good one. Vinyl over a solid core does not lift, bubble or water-mark the way a thin veneer does after fifty years, which is a large part of why these two have survived as well as they have.

Condition

We have two, and they are not identical.

The first is in very good condition throughout — the cladding is clean and unlifted, the corners are sound, and the top grille is flat and true.

The second is in good condition and is the value option. The metal top grille has a slight bow to it. It is visible if you look down at the case from above, invisible from any normal seated position, and it does not affect the fit of a component or the structure of the case. It remains a very presentable cabinet.

Both are structurally solid and both do the job they were built for.
