A mid-1980s NAD 6130 single-well cassette deck, made in Japan, with Dolby B and C noise reduction. It has been serviced on our bench and is in very good condition.
What it is
The 6130 is NAD doing what NAD did best in the eighties: leaving out the gimmicks and spending the money where you hear it. A hard permalloy record and playback head and a belt-driven flywheel transport give it steady, clean playback, and with both Dolby B and Dolby C on board it plays your old tapes the way they were recorded and makes quiet new ones. Dolby C gives roughly twice the noise reduction of Dolby B, which is the difference between tape hiss you stop noticing and tape hiss you never hear.
It is simple to live with. Push buttons select normal, chrome or metal tape, a multiplex filter keeps FM stereo pilot tones out of your off-air recordings, and peak-reading LED meters with a single large record-level control make it easy to set a clean level. Transport keys run record, play, rewind, fast-forward, stop and eject, and pause, and a three-digit counter with reset keeps your place.
At the back, attached input and output leads plug straight into the tape loop of your receiver or amplifier, to record from any source and play back through your system.

A hundred and twenty minutes of Maxell UR, normal bias Type I, still in its factory wrap. Sixty minutes a side is a full album with room left over. Braun Atelier C1 Slim Cassette Deck — Motorized Drawer, Japan
70 mm tall, almost exactly the height of a cassette case, and that is not a coincidence. The tape does not stand upright behind a door the way it does in every Japanese deck of the era — it lies flat and is drawn in horizontally on a motorised tray, the mechanism disappearing into a slot barely thicker than the cassette itself. The C1 arrived in 1980, two years before a CD player made that gesture familiar. Built for Braun in Japan, the matching deck to the Atelier A1 and T1. Good condition.
