The SS-CS3 is a genuine 3-way, 4-driver floorstanding speaker that brings a lot of hardware to the table for its price point. Sony pairs two 5.25-inch Mica Reinforced Cellular (MRC) cone woofers with a 1-inch soft dome tweeter and a dedicated 0.75-inch wide-dispersion super tweeter — a four-driver array more commonly found in speakers costing significantly more. The super tweeter extends high-frequency response all the way to 50 kHz, qualifying the SS-CS3 for High-Resolution Audio certification and delivering notably airy, extended treble performance. The rear-firing bass reflex enclosure extends bass response cleanly down to 45 Hz, providing solid low-frequency foundation without requiring a subwoofer in most moderate-sized rooms.
The tapered faceplate and slim black cabinet design are tidy and modern, fitting easily into contemporary living spaces without dominating the room visually. Each tower is two complete two-way systems, one facing forward and one facing directly backward, both radiating in phase. That is the whole point: where a dipole panel's front and rear bass partially cancel and the speaker has to come several feet into the room, these reinforce each other and the tower is happiest eight to twelve inches off the wall. Four drivers a side, bass to 20 Hz, built in Baltimore. Graded Good, and the grade is the high-gloss end caps — three decades of black lacquer carries scuffs and a few small chips.

A two-way floorstander built on a deliberately simple recipe: one 6.5 inch bass and midrange driver covering everything below a 1 inch textile dome, crossed at 2.7 kHz by a fourth-order Linkwitz-Riley — no midrange handover in the region the ear is most sensitive to, and drivers that sum flat and stay in phase through the crossing. 89 dB into a nominal 8 ohms, happy on anything from 10 to 100 watts, and eight inches wide.
