Tannoy’s die-cast aluminum Arena satellites, in very good condition, offered by the pair in four gloss finishes (white, gloss black, bronze and silver), with or without their matching cast bases.
What they are
The Arena was Tannoy’s answer to the lifestyle satellite: a speaker small enough to sit on a shelf or hang on a wall, built like a piece of industrial design and voiced like a Tannoy. Tannoy rejected lightweight plastics outright: each enclosure is a rigid, cast aluminum shell, finished in high-gloss lacquer, and at 2.5 kg each they are remarkably heavy for their size. You feel the metal the moment you pick one up. The shell’s complex curves are there for a reason, too: they are shaped to break up standing waves inside the cabinet. The matching cast base carries a polished chrome ball joint, so you can angle each satellite just where you want it; Tannoy designed the base to double as a wall bracket.
Inside is the thing that makes a Tannoy a Tannoy: a miniature version of the company’s Dual Concentric driver, with the driver chassis and front baffle made as one piece. The 19 mm titanium-dome tweeter sits in the throat of the 100 mm mid/bass cone, so treble and midrange leave from a single point. Voices stay anchored, the stereo image holds together as you move around the room, and the sound is time-coherent in a way that separate tweeters and woofers rarely manage at this size. Tannoy’s WideBand design carries the treble all the way to 54 kHz, and the drivers are magnetically shielded, so they can sit right beside a screen.
At 88 dB sensitivity and 8 ohms they are easy to drive, from 15 watts up to 100. Pair them with a subwoofer and they make a superb, discreet main system or home theatre front stage.
The press agreed. The Arena system was Home Cinema Choice’s 2005 Speaker System of the Year and Media Totaal’s 2005 Loudspeaker of the Year in the Netherlands, and took a Digital Home Gold Award. Home Cinema Choice called them “stunning speakers,” noting that “a great deal of thought has gone into their aesthetics and build,” while Digital Home wrote that “the paintwork has a Bentley-class finish.”
Sound & Vision’s Al Griffin reviewed the Arena system in October 2005. “Audiophiles and musicians alike will recognize the name Tannoy from the pro-sound world — the company’s speakers are used in recording studios around the globe,” he wrote, and he was a fan of the look: “The Arena’s podlike satellites owe a debt to 1970s sci-fi style: think rounded, organic, and amoeboid.” The review’s verdict: “These speakers’ mod styling, awesome build quality, and versatile mounting options all stand out compared with many other systems in the same price bracket,” and “most folks will appreciate its crisp sound, precise imaging, and overall musicality.”
When new in 2005, the Arena satellites listed at US$419 each, or US$838 a pair, and the matching bases were another US$149 each. In today’s Canadian dollars, that is about $1,600 for a pair of satellites, or about $2,200 with the matching bases.
Radique’s Take
These are Mark’s favourite satellite speakers, full stop. After years of listening to nearly every small speaker that has come through our doors, that is not a declaration he makes lightly, and he has been quietly holding on to these for a while. It is the Dual Concentric point source that wins him over: a tiny cabinet that images like a far bigger speaker, with an ease and coherence most satellites never find.
Choose your finish
The matching bases are a big part of the appeal. They are heavy cast pieces with chrome ball joints, even more solidly built than most dedicated wall brackets, and shaped like a piece of sculpture. They work as table stands or as wall brackets.
Pairs with their matching bases, $495 per pair:
- Silver
- Gloss Black
- Bronze
Satellites only, $345 per pair:
- Gloss Black
- Bronze
- White
Condition
Very Good. The lacquered aluminum shells and drivers, and the bases on the pairs that come with them, present well, as the photographs show.
A Tannoy Dual Concentric in a shell of cast aluminum: small speakers, serious sound.

B&W Solid HCM1 Compact Satellite Speakers with Integrated Stands
A sealed two-way from B&W's Rock Solid series — a 4-inch fibre cone woofer and a polycarbonate dome in a polycarbonate cabinet chosen to kill resonance without adding mass. 90 dB, so modest amplification is enough, and magnetically shielded for desk use. Each speaker comes on its integrated stand bracket. Mark runs a pair as his office near-fields. Cosmetics good, 7 out of 10; tested.
KEF HTS1001 Uni-Q Satellite Speakers Black (Single)
KEF's Uni-Q array puts a 0.6-inch aluminium dome at the acoustic centre of the 3-inch mid-bass, so dispersion stays even off-axis and the far seat hears what the middle seat does. Sealed cast aluminium cabinet in high-gloss black, magnetically shielded, 120 Hz to 22 kHz, 86 dB, 10 to 100 watts. Terminals take bare wire or pin connectors. Very good cosmetic condition.
KEF HTS1001 Uni-Q Satellite Speakers Black Pair
KEF’s Uni-Q array puts a 0.6-inch aluminium dome at the acoustic centre of a 3-inch mid-bass cone, so the pair behaves as a single source and the tonal balance holds across the room rather than in one chair. Sealed cast aluminium enclosures, 120 Hz to 22 kHz, 86 dB, magnetically shielded. Very good cosmetic condition.
Mirage Omnisat OS 1PB-1 Omnipolar Satellite – Made in Canada
Both drivers fire upward into spoon-shaped reflectors Mirage calls OMNIGUIDEs, throwing sound through a full 360 degrees with a deliberate bias toward the front — which is what takes the sweet spot off a single chair. This is the original version at a genuine 7 lbs each, with a cast aluminium baffle and butyl rubber surrounds rather than foam. Built in Canada; condition very good.
Mirage Omnisat OS 1PB-1 Omnipolar Satellite (Pair) – Made in Canada
Both drivers fire upward into spoon-shaped OMNIGUIDE reflectors, giving 360-degree dispersion with a deliberate forward bias. 70 Hz to 20 kHz, 89 dB, cast aluminum woofer baffle and butyl surrounds rather than foam. These are the original 7 lb version; the later revisions come in under five. Very good condition.
PSB VisionSound VS300 Aluminum On-Wall Speaker
An on-wall speaker engineered as one rather than adapted into one. It shares the tweeter, terminals and crossover of PSB's VS400 floorstander, but the port was moved to the front so the cabinet can sit flat to a wall without the wall changing what it does — and a rear switch selects NORMAL or ON-WALL, filling the 400 to 500 Hz dip that hard mounting creates. Extruded aluminium, built in Pickering, Ontario. Graded Excellent or Very Good; the only thing separating the two is a single Tic Tac-sized hole at the extreme edge of one grille frame.
