A classic Japanese-built Technics belt-drive deck with a genuine Technics cartridge, an honest set of features, and a service history we can actually vouch for.

The SL-220 sits quietly in the shadow of Technics’ famous direct-drive decks, which is exactly why it represents good value. It is a two-speed belt-drive turntable with a frequency-generator servo DC motor, a 304mm die-cast aluminium platter, and a static-balanced S-type tonearm with a universal headshell. There is a clear strobe with separate pitch controls giving six percent either way, and auto-return at the end of the side so the arm lifts and parks itself without your attention.

Fitted to it is a Technics EPC-U25 cartridge, the half-inch standard-mount member of Technics’ EPC-25 family. That matters more than it sounds: styli for this family remain widely available and inexpensive, and the aftermarket runs from the standard conical all the way up through elliptical, hyper-elliptical and Shibata profiles. Whatever you spend today, there is a clear and affordable path to more later, on the same cartridge body.

The ground connection has been upgraded to a spade terminal, which is a small change that makes a real difference — a proper spade seats securely under a receiver’s ground post instead of the bare wire that works loose and leaves you chasing hum.

We have also fitted hemispherical silicone bumpers beneath the front corners of the dust cover. The lid on this example sat low enough to crowd the tonearm through its full sweep, so the bumpers lift it clear, and they give the cover a soft landing every time it comes down instead of a hard knock against the plinth.

We know this deck’s history because it is ours. We serviced it before it left the shop the first time, and it has since come back to us through our Perpetual Trade-Back Program and been re-tested. That is an unusual thing to be able to say about a forty-year-old turntable, and it is the reason we can describe it plainly rather than hedging.

Condition

Cosmetically it is graded Good, and it is a handsome deck in silver.

It has been thoroughly inspected and tested to confirm full functionality.
