Tara Labs RSC Prime Bi-Wire Speaker Cables — 15 Foot Pair, Banana Terminated, Rectangular Solid Core Conductors, Made in Oregon
Tara Labs make cable and nothing else, and they have been doing it since 1984. The company’s reputation rests on one idea it has spent four decades refining: Rectangular Solid Core. Where almost every other cable uses round strands bundled together, Tara Labs extrudes a solid conductor with a rectangular cross-section — one continuous piece of copper per run, not a rope of thin wires.
Rectangular Solid Core
The reasoning behind it is properly engineering rather than marketing. At audio frequencies, current does not distribute itself evenly through a conductor; it crowds toward the surface, an effect that gets worse as frequency rises and as conductor diameter grows. Tara Labs’ founders concluded that around 18 gauge was the point where that penalty effectively disappeared for audio, and shaped their conductor to present the right cross-section rather than simply piling on copper. Bundled strands introduce a second problem the solid core sidesteps entirely: every strand-to-strand contact in a stranded cable is a small, oxidising, uncontrolled junction, and there are thousands of them along a run.
Properly Terminated for Bi-Wire
These are the bi-wire version, and they are terminated for it properly: a single set of banana plugs at the amplifier end, and a doubled set at the speaker end. That is what bi-wire termination is supposed to mean and often does not — plenty of cable sold as bi-wire is separated internally but finishes in one pair of plugs, leaving you to keep the speaker’s factory jumpers fitted and get none of the benefit. These give you four connections at the speaker, so the high-frequency and low-frequency binding posts are fed independently, jumpers out.
Why Fifteen Feet
Fifteen feet is the length that solves real rooms. Most cable sold second-hand is eight or ten feet, which covers a system where both speakers sit close to the rack and nothing has to cross a doorway. Fifteen feet reaches the far speaker in a wide room, runs along a baseboard rather than across a floor, and gives you the slack to move the rack later without buying cable again.
Separate Runs Inside the Jacket
Inside the jacket, the low-frequency and high-frequency runs are separate rather than sharing one path, so the large currents feeding a woofer stay away from the small ones feeding a tweeter — and because the terminations follow the construction all the way to the speaker, that separation is maintained end to end rather than being undone at the last inch.
A Word on Mass
There is a great deal of cable here, and the scale tells the story better than any adjective: each run weighs 3.7 lbs, so the pair comes to 7.4 lbs. That is very nearly a quarter of a pound for every foot of cable. Solid rectangular conductors instead of thin strands, separate runs carrying the bi-wire configuration rather than one shared pair, and fifteen feet of all of it in each cable — you feel the difference the moment you pick one up, and nothing about it resembles the wire that came in the box with a receiver.
How It Was Sold
Cable of this construction was never sold cheaply. Tara Labs supplied the RSC Prime line to dealers by the foot and it was made up and terminated to order, at high-end prices — a set at this length, in this configuration, was a serious purchase when it was new. It is being offered here for a small fraction of that.
