Luxman F-105 — A Japanese Luxman Preamplifier with Its Own 25-Watt Amplifier and a 1980s Surround Section Built In

Between 1986 and 1990, during Luxman’s Alpine era, the company built the F-105 as a control centre. Luxman badged it a surround amplifier, but that undersells what this actually is: a Luxman preamplifier, a compact power amplifier, and a surround processor sharing one chassis three and a half inches tall. Few components of any size play this many roles; almost none do it in this little space.

No Remote — Said Up Front

One answer up front, because everyone asks: this unit comes without a remote — everything is operated from the front panel.

The Preamplifier

As a dedicated two-channel preamplifier, it earns the Luxman badge: inputs for CD, tuner, two tape loops with dubbing, and two more line-level sources, with tone controls, mute, and proper stereo line outputs to feed any power amplifier. The tape loops also make it ideal for adding an EQ or other outboard processing. A Bypass mode takes all processing out of the signal path when you want the line stage doing nothing but its job.

The Built-In Amplifier

The built-in amplifier adds a second role: at 25 watts per channel into 8 ohms it will drive a pair of speakers directly, making the F-105 a complete, compact system for a desk, den, or workshop — source in, speakers out, done.

The 1980s Surround Section

The surround section is the third act, and the historically interesting one. Four modes — Dolby Surround for film, Time Delay Surround adjustable in 5 ms steps, Matrix, and Simulated Stereo for mono sources — with the delay built on analog BBD elements, the same technology behind the classic studio delays of the era. Add a pair of rear speakers to any stereo system and it becomes a full surround setup without replacing anything you own; a mono centre output feeds a centre speaker through any small amp.

What It Is Not

It should be said plainly what this is not: the surround modes are 1980s matrix Dolby, not Dolby Digital or any modern format. But judged as what it is — preamp, amplifier, and surround processor in one rare box — there is very little it cannot anchor: a serious two-channel rig, a desktop system, a vintage surround setup, or all three in succession as your needs change. It is almost never seen in North America.

Condition and Testing

Freshly tested on our bench: all inputs, all four surround modes, and the amplifier section confirmed working. Cosmetically this example is graded Very Good — it presents well, with only the standard signs of use and no significant cosmetic flaws.
