Denon PMA-600NE Stereo Integrated Amplifier — Current Model, 45 Watts Per Channel, MM Phono Stage, 192kHz/24-bit DAC, Bluetooth, Tone Controls
A current-model Denon integrated amplifier in excellent condition with its remote, at a substantial saving over a new one.
A Current Model
This is not a discontinued piece. Denon builds the PMA-600NE today and it sells new for $649 CAD (approx. US$465) plus tax. Ours is in excellent condition, tested here, with the original remote. Being a current model also means everything behind it is still in production — parts, service and support — which is not something a vintage amplifier can offer at any price.
Why This Amplifier
The case for the amplifier itself is simple: it does everything. A moving magnet phono stage with a proper ground screw for a turntable, a 192kHz/24-bit Texas Instruments DAC fed by two optical inputs and a coaxial, Bluetooth for a phone or a laptop, four line inputs, a recorder output, a subwoofer output, and a full-size quarter-inch headphone jack on the front. Most amplifiers at any price make you choose two or three of those. Buy this and a pair of speakers and the system is finished.
The Controls
It also keeps the controls people actually miss on modern equipment. There are real bass and treble knobs, giving eight decibels of adjustment either way, and a balance control. Anyone moving across from a vintage receiver will find the front panel reassuringly familiar rather than stripped back to a volume dial and a source button.
Power and Output
The amplifier section is rated at 45 watts per channel into 8 ohms across the full 20 Hz to 20 kHz band at 0.07% distortion, and 70 watts into 4 ohms. We quote the 8 ohm figure because that is the load nearly every speaker presents and it is the honest number to plan around. Denon builds it on their Advanced High Current single push-pull discrete circuit, using output transistors they rate at two to three times the current capacity of conventional parts. Distortion falls to 0.01% at normal listening levels, and the amplifier is specified for speakers anywhere from 4 to 16 ohms.
Speaker Matching
Forty-five watts suits efficient and moderately sensitive speakers, which covers most bookshelf speakers and the majority of slim towers. It is a genuinely good match for anything in the high 80s for sensitivity. Very large, very insensitive floorstanders in a big room want more than this.
The Phono Stage
The phono stage deserves its own mention because it is not the afterthought these usually are. Denon fitted a high-gain equaliser circuit designed for this generation, taking 2.5 mV at 47 kilohms, and the signal-to-noise ratio through phono measures 84 dB. Through the line inputs it is 105 dB. Frequency response runs from 5 Hz to 100 kHz.
Analogue Mode
There is also an analogue mode that shuts down the digital section entirely — not merely muting it, but cutting power to the DAC and stopping its clock circuitry — so nothing from the digital side can contaminate the signal while you are playing a record. It is the kind of feature that usually appears several price tiers up.
Subwoofer Output
The subwoofer output is worth knowing about if the room is large or the speakers are small. It means adding a powered subwoofer later is a single cable, with no adapters and no compromises.
Condition and What Is Included
Condition is excellent, and the original remote control is included. It has been tested here to confirm it performs as originally designed.
A current-model Denon that covers records, streaming, headphones and a subwoofer in one box, in excellent condition with its remote, for well under the price of a new one.
