Arcam Alpha 5 Integrated Amplifier — 40 WPC, Made in England

A British integrated amplifier from Arcam’s Cambridge factory, 40 watts a side, built on the principle that anything which does not improve the sound does not go in the box.

Arcam began life as A&R Cambridge in 1976 and spent the following two decades building a particular reputation: amplifiers that were plainly finished, modestly specified on paper, and consistently better to listen to than the numbers suggested. The Alpha 5 is that thinking at its most distilled. It looks like the company’s expensive Delta models stripped back to essentials, because that is more or less what it is.

Line-level sources only on this one — there is no phono stage, so a turntable needs a separate phono preamplifier ahead of it. Worth saying plainly up front. If you are running a CD player, a streamer, a tuner or a tape deck, none of that matters; if a turntable is the main source and you have nothing to feed it through, this is not the amplifier for you and one of our receivers will suit better.

What it does have is four identical line inputs — labelled Aux, CD, Tuner and Video, though the labels are a convenience rather than a constraint — plus a proper tape monitor loop and two sets of output terminals.

The Direct switch is the one worth knowing about. It takes the tone and balance controls out of the circuit entirely, leaving the shortest possible route from input to output. The tone controls themselves are deliberately gentle, quoted at three decibels of boost and cut at 100 hertz and 10 kilohertz — enough for slight adjustment to a room, and not intended for more than that.

There is a design decision on the back panel worth understanding before you buy, because it looks like a fault and is not. The main pair of speaker terminals is hardwired and permanently live, on the reasoning that any switch in the output path is one more thing to fail or degrade. The SP2 switch does not divert the output to a second pair — it adds one. For the same reason, plugging in headphones does not silence the speakers. If you listen on headphones regularly, run your speakers from the switched second pair and use SP2 to mute them.

The speaker terminals are Arcam’s own shrouded four-millimetre binding posts, which are among the better ones fitted to anything at this price in the period. The shrouds guide bare wire into place and keep stray strands from bridging anything they should not. Power comes in on a standard removable IEC cord, and this is a North American unit wired for 120 volt mains — it plugs straight into a wall outlet and runs as it is.

Rachel Cramond reviewed it for Gramophone in July 1994 and signed off with “no hesitation in warmly recommending” it. The substance behind that is the useful part. She found an amplifier that stepped out of the way of the music rather than putting its own stamp on it, held its composure evenly across the frequency range at every level she asked of it, and drove an average-to-large room to realistic volume without any sign of strain — while being straight about the fact that Arcam’s larger models will move more air.

At just over ten pounds this is a compact, low, unobtrusive amplifier — 430 millimetres wide and only 74 tall — which makes it straightforward to shelve and cheap to ship.

It sold new in Britain for £229 in 1994 — a little over $850 in 2026 Canadian dollars, which is the number worth holding against our price.
