Monitor Audio Silver S8 Towers – Made in England, Warm Beech

A pair of three-way Monitor Audio towers from the Silver S range, in very good condition, with a metal driver in every position and a warm beech veneer that suits almost any room.

What they are

Monitor Audio built its reputation in England on metal drivers, and the Silver S range, introduced in 2002, is where that technology arrived at a price real listeners could reach. Every driver in the S8 uses the company’s C-CAM material, a ceramic-coated aluminum and magnesium alloy that is very light and very stiff. A cone like that moves as one piece instead of flexing, which is where the clean, detailed character of these speakers comes from.

At the top of each cabinet, a gold-coloured 1″ C-CAM dome tweeter sits behind a protective mesh. Below it are three 6″ C-CAM cones in cast chassis: the upper one, with its pointed phase plug, carries the midrange, and the two below share the bass. Two rear ports extend the low end to a rated 35 Hz, so these fill a room without needing a subwoofer to do it.

At 91 dB and 6 ohms they are an easy, efficient load, happy on a good vintage receiver as well as a modern integrated amplifier. Around the back, two pairs of gold 5-way binding posts allow bi-wiring or bi-amping, and take bare wire, spades, pins or banana plugs. We recommend our own Radique Audio gold-plated banana plugs, and our Custom Speaker Cable Builder will make you a single-wire or bi-wire set to the exact length, terminated and ready to plug in.

When Stereophile’s John Atkinson reviewed the smaller Silver S2 from the same range in August 2003, he heard “a noticeably bighearted sound.” The S8 takes that same family of drivers and gives it a full-size tower cabinet.

The S8 sold new in 2002 for US$1,499 a pair, roughly $3,500 in 2026 Canadian dollars.

Condition

Very Good, and free of significant marks. The Warm Beech real wood veneer, black rear panels, black plinths and the metal cones all present well, as the photographs show. Black cloth grilles are included.
