What it is
PSB summarised the problem better than anyone else has: small, deep and loud — pick two. The HD10 was an eighteen-month attempt to have all three, and the HD in the name stands for High Density, which is the honest description of what they did. A 10-inch high-mass poly-coated fibre cone on an extra-heavy-duty cast aluminum basket, with an oversize magnet and a large-diameter voice coil, sits in a computer-modelled enclosure barely bigger than the driver itself, flanked by two opposing 10-inch passive radiators. Behind it is a Class H amplifier rated at 750 watts continuous and 2,000 watts of peak dynamic potential.
The two passive radiators face opposite sides of the cabinet, so their reaction forces largely cancel each other out. And because the radiators do the loading rather than a port tube, no internal volume is lost to plumbing. The result is output to a rated 30 Hz from a box that has no business reaching it, with as much as two inches of peak-to-peak excursion available when the material asks for it.
The Class H amplifier is the other half. Rather than sitting at a fixed rail voltage and shedding the difference as heat, it raises its supply only when the signal demands it, which is how 750 continuous watts fit inside a cabinet this size. PSB’s smart bass monitoring sits over the top, holding the driver inside its excursion limits so that what you hear at high level is still bass rather than a driver running out of room.
The connection panel deserves particular attention if you run vintage gear. Alongside line-level stereo and LFE inputs and outputs, the HD10 has high-level stereo inputs on five-way binding posts, which take bare wire, spades, pins or banana plugs (our own Radique Audio banana plugs are a neat fit, and our Custom Speaker Cable Builder will make the short run from your amplifier), so it takes a speaker-level feed straight from the amplifier terminals of a receiver that has no subwoofer output at all. A great many superb amplifiers from the 1970s have no LFE socket anywhere on them, and this is the sub that does not care. Bass level, crossover and continuously variable phase controls are all on board, along with auto on/off and a trigger input for anyone integrating it into a controlled system.
When Audio Ideas Guide’s Andrew Marshall reviewed it in June 2008, he found its bass reaching down to 25 Hz before rolling off.
The HD10 launched in 2007 at US$1,499, about $2,400 in 2026 Canadian dollars. For comparison, PSB’s current compact subwoofer, the SubSeries BP8, sells new in Canada for $2,599 CAD (approx. US$1,870).
Condition
Good. The satin black cabinet is clean on the front, sides and back, but the top carries a few light scuffs near the front right corner, visible in the photographs. The grille, PSB badge, controls and all four feet are intact.
Its sound is also graded Good, and it is still a very good subwoofer. Bass extension is excellent, so is its output for a cabinet this compact, and it sounds great at lower volumes. We did note a little vibration when it is played loud, so it is an excellent match for home theatre and music in a medium or larger room. In a small, enclosed space it is happiest at moderate levels, where even a near-field setup can work well.
In Very Good condition we would list an HD10 at $745 CAD (approx. US$535). Because of the scuffs and that note, this one is $595 CAD (approx. US$430).
Deep, powerful bass from a cabinet you can live with, an amplifier with real headroom, and inputs that work with the vintage amplifier you already own.

PSB Image 2B Bookshelf Speakers, Made in Canada
A front-ported two-way built in Canada: 6.5-inch injection-moulded polypropylene woofer, 1-inch ferrofluid-cooled aluminium dome, original PSB tweeters and crossovers still in place. Sensitivity is 89 dB anechoic and the nominal 6-ohm load dips to 4, so anything from 10 to 100 watts a channel suits. Very good cosmetic condition. The grilles are not included.
PSB Image 8C Centre Channel Speaker — 240W Peak | Made in Canada
Two 5.25-inch woofers either side of a 1-inch aluminium dome, crossed at 2.2 kHz in a wide front-ported cabinet — 55 Hz to 21 kHz, 90 dB, and 240 watts of peak handling on a 6 ohm load. Voiced by Paul Barton against NRC anechoic measurements and built in Canada. Very good condition, apart from a few small mounting holes underneath that a shelf hides.
Gold Plated Banana Plugs by Radique Audio – Dual Set Screws
Dual set screws rather than a single screw or a compression sleeve, so the wire is held at two points and will not work loose behind the rack. Six-leaf gold-plated springs for a tighter grip in the binding post, full-length non-conductive jackets colour-coded for polarity, and gentle knurling that will not fray heavy cable. 19.4 g a pair, 25% heavier than the brand we used to carry. Fits 12 to 18 AWG.
Gold Series Subwoofer Cable
Six layers around a 67-strand tinned copper core: PE insulation, aluminum foil, a 128-strand braided copper shield, a PVC jacket, and braided gold cotton mesh outside. 195 strands of 0.10 mm tinned copper in all, 7 mm outer diameter. Gold-plated RCAs in narrow alloy jackets that fit crowded back panels, with dual degaussing rings. Four lengths: 2, 3, 5 and 10 metres.

Yamaha YST-SW105 Active Servo Subwoofer — Compact 100W
An 8-inch front-firing paper cone on Yamaha's Advanced Active Servo amplifier — 100 watts into 5 ohms, down to 30 Hz, from a cabinet small enough to tuck beside a bookshelf pair. Continuously variable high-cut from 50 to 150 Hz, a Music/Movie voicing switch, RCA and speaker-level inputs plus full-range pass-through outputs. Very good condition.
Yamaha SW-3 Active Servo Subwoofer — 10″ Woofer | Air Woofer Tec
Yamaha’s Active Servo Technology couples a negative-impedance drive amplifier to a Helmholtz resonator port — the Air Woofer opening — so the amplifier corrects the driver’s motion as it works. 100 watts into a 25 cm cone, rated down to 25 Hz, with a continuously variable 50–150 Hz high-cut at 24 dB per octave. Speaker-level and line inputs both. Very good condition.
JVC SX-PW33 Slim Tower Subwoofer — 6.5in, 100W, High-Pass Out
A tall, narrow bass column meant to stand beside a cabinet rather than in front of it — 8.25 inches across the front and unusually deep at 17, which is the trade: the depth buys back the internal volume the narrow baffle gives away, so a 6.5 inch woofer is properly loaded in a strip of floor barely wider than a hardcover book. Driven by an integrated 100 watt amplifier, with speaker-level inputs and high-pass outputs so it works with an amplifier that has no subwoofer output at all. Good condition.
LG SH96TA-W Passive Subwoofer, Front-Firing, Front-Ported, Black
The passive subwoofer that shipped with LG's SH96TA home-theatre system — forward-firing driver and a front port, so it can back onto a wall or sit inside a cabinet without upsetting the tuning. It is a 3-ohm load and needs a receiver with a dedicated passive-subwoofer output; it should not go on ordinary speaker terminals. No power cord, no plate amp to age out. Good cosmetic condition.

Speaker-level in and out, stereo line inputs and an unfiltered LFE jack, with a variable 60 to 160 Hz low-pass and a phase switch. 37 lbs, black matte. Very good cosmetic condition.
