Tannoy Mercury VC — The Centre Channel Voiced from the Mercury V1, Built to Make Dialogue Effortless
A properly voiced centre channel from Tannoy’s Mercury V range, built to sit under a screen and make dialogue effortless to follow.
The Job of a Centre Channel
A centre speaker has one job that matters more than any other, and it is not impressing anyone in a demonstration. It is making speech intelligible at the volume you actually watch at, in a room with a sofa and a rug and someone opening a bag of crisps. The VC was designed around that job. Two 100mm multi-fibre coated pulped paper cones flank a one-inch woven polyester dome, damped with a nitro-urethane layer, crossing over at 2.9 kHz — a driver arrangement chosen for even off-axis behaviour, so the person in the corner armchair hears the same dialogue as the person in the middle of the sofa.
Voiced to Match
It is voiced from the components and tuning of the Mercury V1 standmount, which is the part that matters if you already own Tannoys. A centre that does not timbre-match the speakers either side of it draws attention to itself every time a voice pans across the front stage. This one was built to disappear into a Mercury V front three, and it sits comfortably with other Tannoys of similar vintage.
Practical Details
Practical details are sensible throughout. The cabinet is magnetically shielded, so it can sit hard against a screen or on a shelf below one without trouble. Twin rear reflex ports give it more low-end weight than a centre this size usually manages, which is what keeps male voices from thinning out. Terminals are proper 4 mm binding posts that take bananas, spades or bare wire. At 90 dB sensitivity and 8 ohms it is an easy load, happy on anything from 10 watts upward, and it will take 70 watts continuous without complaint. Worth measuring your shelf before ordering: at nearly 17 inches wide it is a full-size centre, not a compact one.
Condition
Cosmetically this example is graded Very Good, showing only the light handling marks a well-kept speaker of its age carries. It has been bench-tested in-house.
A well-made, easy-to-drive centre channel that does the one thing a centre has to do, and does it without asking much of the amplifier in front of it.

Tannoy Mercury mX1 Bookshelf Speakers — Dark Oak, Port Bungs
A 25mm soft dome over a 130mm ceramic-coated paper cone, 87dB into 8 ohms, rated 10 to 100 watts, on five-way binding posts. The removable port bungs are the reason to buy them — in, and the cabinet runs sealed and tight against a wall; out, and the bass extends for stand duty in the room. Dark oak with black drivers and matching grilles. Both graded very good.

Tweeter and woofers sit as close together as physically possible — Energy's Convergent Source Module — so they behave as one source and hold the balance across a wide seating area rather than one chair. Dual 5.5-inch woofers on the patented Ribbed Elliptical Surround, a 1-inch hyperbolic aluminium dome, 92 dB and up to 200 watts, rear-ported to 60 Hz. The grille is not included. Condition very good.
Yamaha NS-C90 Center Speaker – Dual-Angle Tilt, Made in Japan
The cabinet is asymmetrical on purpose: flip it over and it tilts the other way, aiming up at you from a low shelf or down at you from the top of a cabinet. Sealed rather than ported, so it needs no rear clearance. Two full-range drivers, nothing crossing in the vocal band. 6 ohms, 50 watts nominal. Built in Japan; very good condition.
