B&W DM603 S2 Floorstanding Speakers – Rare Cherrywood Finish, Excellent Condition
A distinguished pair of B&W floorstanding speakers representing one of the most respected lineages in audio engineering. The DM603 S2 carries forward the legacy of the renowned Matrix 801 and Matrix 802, bringing world-leading acoustic expertise to the mid-range at genuine value. Made in the United Kingdom, these speakers deliver audiophile-grade sound reproduction with unexpected power from their moderately sized enclosure. This particular pair is exceptionally rare—finished in cherrywood rather than the standard black ash, and preserved in excellent cosmetic condition.
This pair has been tested and verified working. Cosmetically, these speakers present in excellent condition with pristine cherrywood vinyl finish, clean black cloth grilles, and minimal signs of use.
Sound & Performance:
The DM603 S2 is a 2.5-way bass-reflex floorstanding speaker system featuring two 180mm drivers—one bass-only unit and one bass/midrange unit—paired with a 26mm aluminum dome tweeter. This arrangement improves system power handling and reduces demands on the bass/midrange driver, resulting in superior midrange clarity and coherence across all frequencies.
The dual 180mm Kevlar cone drivers deliver unexpected dynamic range and control from the relatively compact footprint. The heavier Cobex cone construction in the low-frequency drivers delivers lower fundamental resonance frequency and tight, articulate bass reproduction that belies the speaker’s size. The crossover operates at 150Hz and 4kHz, ensuring seamless integration between drivers and a cohesive, natural presentation.
The frequency range extends from 37Hz to 30kHz (–6dB points) with frequency response of 48Hz–20kHz ±3dB and 90dB sensitivity. These speakers are rated for amplifiers between 25–150 watts, though we strongly recommend driving them with at least 75 watts per channel minimum. The tweeter design particularly benefits from higher-powered amplifiers—less than 75 watts per channel risks potential tweeter stress at high volumes, as these high-frequency transducers respond optimally to robust amplification.
Cabinet Construction & Build Quality:
The enclosure construction is exceptionally heavy with extensive internal bracing that virtually eliminates cabinet resonance and coloration. The fourth-order vented bass reflex design with optimized port tuning delivers controlled, articulate bass response without port noise or chuffing. The substantial mass and bracing are immediately evident when handling these speakers—they feel like premium components built for longevity and performance.
The rare cherrywood vinyl finish over MDF construction provides both aesthetic warmth and acoustic inertia. The warm, rich cherry tone develops patina with age and creates a sophisticated, furniture-like presence in any listening environment. This finish is significantly less common than the standard black ash, making this pair particularly desirable for collectors and those seeking visual distinction. The finish resists dust and minor wear while maintaining its warm character.
Versatility & Integration:
These speakers deliver exceptional versatility across all musical genres—from classical and jazz where midrange clarity is paramount, to rock and electronic music where their dynamic range and controlled bass shine. The 8-ohm nominal impedance ensures easy amplifier compatibility with vintage receivers, modern integrated amplifiers, and high-quality power amplifiers.
The dual pairs of gold-plated 5-way binding posts enable bi-amping or bi-wiring configurations for those seeking enhanced performance refinement. The independent amplification of bass and midrange drivers from tweeter frequencies can unlock additional clarity and dynamic control.
