Mirage BPS-150 — Canadian-Built Bipolar Bass, Dual 8-Inch
A substantial Canadian-built bipolar subwoofer from Mirage’s serious era, and the best-sounding example of this model we have had through the shop.
Why Bipolar
The bipolar arrangement is the whole idea. Rather than one driver firing in one direction, the BPS-150 mounts two 8-inch long-throw woofers on opposite faces of the cabinet, firing outward in phase. Two things follow. The mechanical forces of the drivers oppose and largely cancel, so the cabinet stays still instead of vibrating along with the music — and bass loads into the room from two directions at once, which excites room modes far more evenly than a single front-firing driver. The practical result is a subwoofer that is much less fussy about placement and much less prone to the one-note boom that gives subwoofers a bad name.
The Amplifier
Driving them is a discrete MOSFET Class A/B amplifier rated 150 watts continuous and 600 watts peak. Class A/B in a subwoofer is worth noting — heavier, costlier and more linear than the switching amplifiers that replaced it. Response reaches down to 24 Hz, the low-pass filter is continuously variable from 50 to 150 Hz, and there is a phase switch plus an audio contour control offering flat or boost at 50 Hz for tailoring output to the room.
Connections
Connection is comprehensive in a way modern subwoofers often are not: line level RCA in and out, plus speaker level in and out. That means this integrates with a modern AV receiver, or with a vintage integrated amplifier or receiver that has no subwoofer output at all. For anyone running a classic two-channel system, that second option is the difference between owning a subwoofer and not.
Character — An Honest Note
Be clear about its character, because it matters for choosing correctly. Owners consistently describe the BPS-150 as tight, defined and musical rather than thunderous. Two 8-inch drivers will not pressurise a large room the way a 12-inch home theatre sub will. What they do instead is start and stop cleanly, which is exactly what music asks for and exactly what most subwoofers fail at. For a music-first system, or a home theatre in a normally sized room, this is the more satisfying choice. If your priority is maximum output for action films in a large space, look at a 12-inch instead and we will happily point you at one.
Cabinet and Origin
The cabinet is finished in piano black lacquer and stamped Made in Canada — from the era when Mirage built in Toronto, to a standard that has largely disappeared at this price.
Radique’s Take
La-Donna has tested a great many subwoofers for us, and this one earned the highest sound score we have given this model. Worth stating plainly, because she is not easily impressed and the scoring is not generous.
Condition
Cosmetically graded Very Good, and we don’t hand that rating out casually. Thoroughly inspected and tested in-house and working perfectly.
Properly built, properly powered, and Canadian-made — the kind of bass that improves music rather than merely adding weight to it.
