NHT SuperOne 6.5″ 2-Way Sealed Bookshelf Speakers — Gloss Black
$275.00
Sealed, not ported — a 6.5-inch long-throw woofer and a 1-inch fluid-cooled soft dome, both video shielded, reaching 57 Hz in room without a port to smear the bottom end. 86 dB sensitivity and 25 to 150 watts, so they want a real amplifier. Radique high-density felt pads in magenta fitted under each cabinet. Very good condition.

NHT SuperOne — Sealed Two-Ways from the Budget-High-End Era
Compact sealed two-ways from NHT’s celebrated budget-high-end era, with real bass weight and the kind of midrange that made the name.
NHT — Now Hear This
NHT — Now Hear This, out of California — built its reputation on a simple proposition: acoustic-suspension cabinets, carefully integrated drivers, and performance that embarrassed speakers costing several times more. The SuperOne was the model that carried that argument furthest. NHT’s own framing was that it took the miniature SuperZero and gave it an extra octave of bass, by way of a larger woofer in a slightly larger cabinet — with the useful side effects of greater dynamic range, better detail retrieval, and higher playback levels at lower distortion. With response reaching down to 57 Hz, a subwoofer becomes a choice rather than a requirement.
Sealed, Not Ported
The design is sealed, not ported. That matters more than it sounds. A great many compact speakers use a port to manufacture the impression of bass, and pay for it with overhang and a bass line you can hear but not follow. The SuperOne’s acoustic-suspension cabinet gives up a little output in exchange for bass that starts and stops when the recording does — which is why these have always been as satisfying on two-channel music as they are in a home theatre. The absence of a port also means they sit close to a wall, or on a wall, without the boom that would punish a ported design in the same position.
Drivers and Crossover
A 6.5-inch long-throw woofer handles the bottom and midrange, crossed to a 1-inch fluid-cooled soft dome tweeter. Both drivers are video shielded, so these sit safely beside a display of any vintage. The cabinet is a compact, heavily braced box finished in high-gloss black laminate, and it is noticeably dense for its size — the build quality is a substantial part of why the midrange stays clean. Connection is by gold-plated 5-way binding posts, which accept banana plugs, spades or bare wire.
Amplifier Matching
Sensitivity is 86 dB, which is modest, and NHT rated them for 25 to 150 watts per channel. In practice they reward a real amplifier: give them current and they open up considerably. They are not a speaker to run off the smallest receiver in the cupboard.
Radique-Fitted Enhancements
Each cabinet is fitted with Radique Audio High Density Felt pads in our signature Magenta. They protect shelving and furniture surfaces, decouple the cabinet from whatever it sits on, and stop a light speaker creeping forward under sustained bass.
Condition
Cosmetically this pair is graded Very Good, with clean cabinets and drivers throughout. High-gloss black is an unforgiving finish and these have been looked after.
The Line Is Still Alive
Worth knowing the line is still alive. NHT continues to build a SuperOne — the current 2.1, sold as a single rather than a pair. It is not the same speaker: the 2.1 uses a pulp cone woofer, a silk dome tweeter and a revised crossover. What is remarkable is the cabinet, which measures 11.6 by 7.25 by 8.5 inches — precisely the same box as the pair in front of you. Thirty years of competition, and NHT has not found a reason to change the enclosure. That says more about the original design than any specification could.

Tested and confirmed performing to standard, then inspected and photographed in-house.

Ninety decibels sensitive, so a modest receiver drives them well. Black ash, graded Very Good, bench-tested here. Pair.

MartinLogan Motion 15 Bookshelf Speakers – Folded Motion, Boxed
The reason to want these is the tweeter — MartinLogan's Folded Motion driver is a pleated ribbon rather than a dome, so it squeezes air out from between its pleats and barely has to move. A 5.25-inch aluminium cone below it, 92 dB sensitivity, and the high-gloss black clean of the swirls these show so readily. Original boxes included.

JBL 62T Bookshelf Speakers – Rosewood Finish, Titanium Dome
Discounted for the aftermarket screw holes a previous owner left in the back panels, and very good everywhere else — original drivers, clean rosewood finish, both tested here. A mid-1980s two-way with a pure titanium tweeter that runs out to 23 kHz, and an easy 89 dB load that a thirty-watt vintage receiver drives properly.
Mission 731 Bookshelf — Made in England, Inverted Driver Design
Two things to tell you: a ding on the top side edge of one cabinet, and third-party binding posts a previous owner fitted to one speaker. Otherwise good — and the design is the interesting part, since Mission's inverted geometry puts the tweeter below the woofer to bring the two into step at seated ear height. Made in England.
Bowers & Wilkins WM2 Outdoor Speakers, Pearl White, w/ Brackets
On an outdoor speaker the condition is the whole story — these are almost never retired for how they sound, but for sun turning a white cabinet chalky and yellow, freeze-thaw working at the seams, and grilles blooming with rust. Pearl White shows all of it more plainly than black would, and this pair grades Very Good, factory wall brackets included. B&W did not design a weatherproof box and then find a driver to fit it either: a 130 mm woven fibreglass cone crossed at 3.5 kHz to a 25 mm dome, the same material philosophy as their indoor speakers.
Castle Knight 1 Bookshelf Speakers — Real Wood Cherry, Pair
From a Yorkshire company that spent forty years being known for its cabinets above all else. The cherry veneer is deep-figured real timber, book-matched across the two cabinets so the grain mirrors when they are set up together, then sealed and waxed by hand over more than five days. Underneath is an honest two-way bass-reflex with a 130 mm woven natural-fibre bass/mid driver and five-way binding posts. Very Good condition.
