Onkyo DX-C206 6-Disc CD Changer – Level 1 Serviced, Remote

An Onkyo carousel changer from 1992, serviced on our bench and supplied with a remote.

What it is

The DX-C206 comes from the period when Onkyo was building carousel changers to the same standard as its single-disc players rather than treating them as a convenience item. The carousel loads from the front, and discs that are not playing can be changed without interrupting the one that is — the reason people bought carousels over magazine changers, and the reason they still make sense in a room where the music should not stop while you sort out what comes next.

The conversion is a 1-bit design with eight-times oversampling, and the measured figures are what you would expect of a serious early-nineties Onkyo: 96 dB of dynamic range, 96 dB signal to noise, 90 dB of channel separation, and total harmonic distortion of 0.004 percent. Frequency response runs from 2 Hz to 20 kHz.

One thing to know before you buy

This player does not play CD-R discs. It reads commercially pressed CDs only.

That is characteristic of players built in 1992 rather than a fault in this one. Recordable discs were barely on the market when this changer was designed, and their dye layer reflects less light than the aluminum of a pressed disc — players of this generation were built to read the pressed disc and were never asked to do anything else. If your collection is pressed CDs, this is a non-issue. If you burn your own, this is not the machine for you, and we would rather tell you now than have you find out.

Outputs

Analog stereo RCA only. There is no optical or coaxial digital output on this model, so the player’s own converter is the one doing the work — which, given the figures above, is no hardship.

The remote

It comes with an Onkyo remote. It is not the original remote for this model — it is an Onkyo unit from elsewhere in the range, supplied so the player can be driven from the chair rather than the front panel.

The work that has been done

Level 1 Service

This unit has undergone our Level 1 service and testing, which should ensure many more years of reliable performance ahead. That covers thorough testing of all inputs, outputs and controls, deep cleaning and deoxidation of all pots and switches, replacement of any blown indicator lamps, a check and clean of the power supply wiring, and post-service burn-in and sign-off testing.

Level 1 is the level a well-kept machine needs. It is not a lesser standard — every unit that leaves our bench meets the same performance standard whatever level of work got it there, carries the full Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty, and is eligible for the Perpetual Trade-Back Program. A player that only needed Level 1 arrived in good order, and it is usually the better value for it.

Condition

Very good. The black facia and controls present well for a machine of this age.
