Technics SL-PD6 5-Disc CD Changer, MASH DAC, Optical Out, with Remote
Made in Japan.
A clean and reliable late-1990s Technics SL-PD6 five-disc carousel CD changer in good cosmetic condition, fully tested and working — a genuine piece of 90s Japanese hi-fi heritage with the elegant fast-load rotary mechanism, MASH-series digital-to-analog conversion, and a useful optical digital output for connection to modern DACs and AV receivers.
The SL-PD6 is one of Technics’ last and most refined five-disc carousel changers, introduced in 1999 at the tail end of the brand’s golden CD era. The five-disc rotary mechanism allows up to four discs to be swapped out while the fifth continues to play uninterrupted — the convenience that made carousel changers so popular for both hi-fi systems and party-mode music duty. The mechanism on this unit has been tested across all five disc positions and is operating cleanly, with smooth tray rotation and reliable disc loading.
Sonically, the SL-PD6 uses Technics’ MASH (Multi-stage Noise Shaping) digital filter and DAC — a 1-bit conversion architecture that Technics championed throughout the 1990s and which has retained a loyal following among vintage CD enthusiasts for its smooth, natural, and notably non-fatiguing presentation. The unit measures impressively for its category: 100 dB signal-to-noise ratio, 92 dB dynamic range, 0.007% total harmonic distortion, and a 2 V line output level fully compatible with any modern integrated amp or AV receiver.
A particularly useful feature for modern systems is the rear-panel optical digital output (TOSLINK), which allows the SL-PD6 to bypass its internal DAC entirely and feed a clean digital signal directly to a modern external DAC, AV receiver, or DAC-equipped streamer. This effectively turns the SL-PD6 into a high-quality CD transport, letting the buyer take advantage of contemporary DAC technology while still enjoying the convenience of a five-disc carousel. The unit also plays CD-R discs reliably — confirmed by testing — making it ideal for owners with archives of recorded mix discs and personal compilations.
The unit ships with a non-original Technics-compatible remote control that has been tested with this player. The remote successfully operates the core functions: play, stop, track skip (forward and back), and direct track number entry. Some of the more specialised programming and edit functions on the original remote may not be available with this substitute remote, but for everyday use the included remote covers all the essentials. The transport’s front-panel controls retain full functionality for any feature not addressed by the remote.
