Description

📻 Pioneer SX-3800 Stereo Receiver — Vintage, Made in Japan

The Pioneer SX-3800 stereo receiver is one of the finest pieces to emerge from Pioneer’s acclaimed early 1980s lineup — a non-switching amplifier, quartz-locked digital tuner, and iconic blue Fluoroscan power meters, all wrapped in exceptional original cosmetics with beautifully preserved wood side panels. Made in Japan, and built to last another forty years.

🎛️ Pioneer SX-3800 Stereo Receiver — Non-Switching Amplifier Design

Manufactured from 1980–1981, the SX-3800 sat just below the flagship SX-3900 in Pioneer’s receiver hierarchy — and its amplifier section reflects that pedigree. The non-switching amplifier controls output transistor bias at high speed, eliminating crossover distortion entirely. The result is an extraordinarily clean 60 watts per channel into 8 ohms with a vanishingly low 0.005% THD — a figure that rivals many modern amplifiers. Frequency response extends from 7 Hz to 80 kHz, and a damping factor of 50 provides excellent control over demanding speaker loads.

📡 Quartz-Locked Digital Tuner & Fluoroscan Meters

The quartz-locked FM tuner pairs an analog dial with a blue fluorescent digital frequency display. The quartz servo system was designed to hold station lock without drift — please see the FM disclosure below for the tuner condition of this particular unit. The distinctive blue Fluoroscan logarithmic power meters display output from 0.01 to 80 watts without range switching — a Pioneer hallmark of this era that remains as functional as it is visually captivating.

🎵 Phono Stage, Tape Loops & System Flexibility

  • Moving magnet phono stage — 2.5 mV input sensitivity, 82 dB S/N ratio for quiet, capable vinyl playback
  • Two tape monitor loops — also serve as insert points for external equalizers or signal processors
  • Pre-out / main-in connections — separate the preamp and power amp sections for system expansion
  • Dual speaker outputs with front-panel A/B switching
  • Subsonic filter to reduce low-frequency warp rumble from turntable playback
  • Headphone output

⚠️ FM Tuner Disclosure — Read Before Buying

During a recent pre-shipping inspection, our bench identified two faults in this unit’s FM section, and we would rather tell you plainly than have you discover them. First, the analog dial pointer reads about half a point off against the digital frequency display across the FM band — tuned to 106.1 FM, for example, the digital display correctly reads 106.1 while the pointer sits at roughly 106.58 on the printed dial scale. The digital readout is the accurate one and stations land exactly where it says; the pointer and dial scale simply disagree with it. Second, and more significantly, the tuner will not hold FM stereo lock reliably. Both faults are confined to FM: the amplifier section, phono stage, AM, and all line-level inputs perform to specification on our bench. If FM listening is central to how you will use this receiver, this is not the right unit for you — we would rather lose the sale than the trust. If your listening lives on vinyl, streaming, or any other source, neither fault will ever touch it. This unit remains backed by our Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty on everything except the two FM faults disclosed here, and by our Perpetual Trade-Back Program in full.

🔧 Condition & Service

This unit presents in very good cosmetic condition with beautifully preserved original wood side panels. It has undergone our Level One service and testing — the amplifier, phono, and line-level sections all test to specification, with the two FM-section faults disclosed above. At 35.7 lbs (16.2 kg), the SX-3800’s substantial chassis and robust power supply reflect Pioneer’s audio-first engineering philosophy of the golden era of hi-fi.
