Onkyo TX-906 Stereo Receiver – 80 WPC, Dolby Pro Logic, 1990s

An early-nineties Onkyo receiver with real power behind it and a phono input for your turntable, through our Level 1 service and playing as it should.

What it is

The TX-906 is one of those receivers owners still call a sleeper. It is rated at 80 watts per channel into 8 ohms, both channels driven from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at no more than 0.08% distortion. Onkyo’s Low Impedance Drive and discrete output stage let the main speaker outputs handle speakers down to 4 ohms, so it drives most bookshelf and floorstanding speakers comfortably, and its sound is clean and open through the mids and highs.

It was also one of Onkyo’s first steps into home theatre. Dolby Pro Logic decoding and a center mode are built in, with pre-outs for adding powered center and rear channels, so it can run a simple surround setup or stay a straightforward two-channel stereo receiver. A Source Direct button takes the tone controls out of the signal path for the cleanest route from your sources. There is a proper phono input for a turntable, inputs for CD, two tape decks and two video sources, and a quartz-synthesized AM/FM tuner with 40 presets.

One thing to know before you buy

The TX-906 was designed for Onkyo’s multi-room system, and its second pair of speaker terminals (the remote speakers) depends on the original remote control. They can be switched on through the Simul Source mode, but their volume can only be set from the remote. This unit does not come with its remote. Your main speakers work fully from the front panel, with nothing held back. If you want to use the remote speakers as a second zone, you would need to source an Onkyo remote for it.

Good. It works as it should, and the black cabinet and faceplate present well, as the photographs show, with the normal marks of a receiver in its thirties.
