A five-disc NAD changer with an HDCD decoder on board, tested and working, with both digital outputs and its original remote — and a feature its cheaper sibling never had.

Start with what this does best. It holds five CDs at once, which is a convenience that quietly disappeared from the market, and it puts them out through NAD’s own analogue stage or straight into your DAC via coaxial or optical digital output. If you already own a decent DAC or a receiver with digital inputs, the T572 becomes a transport. If you do not, NAD’s analogue output stands on its own — this is a company that built its reputation on CD players.

The carousel lets you change discs while one is playing, so you can reload four while the fifth keeps going and never break the music. That was the difference between this and the cheaper T571 when new, and it is worth having.

The HDCD decoder is the other thing worth knowing about. High Definition Compatible Digital encodes roughly twenty bits of range inside an ordinary sixteen-bit CD, and a great many nineties and early-two-thousands releases carry the encoding without making much of it on the sleeve. Played on a machine without a decoder, that extra information stays compressed. This player has the decoder, which most never did.

It also plays CD-Rs and CD-RWs, so burned discs and homemade compilations work properly rather than being rejected, and it reads MP3 discs. A single CD-R of MP3s holds hours of music, so five of them loaded at once is an evening you never have to get up for.

The DVD side still works exactly as it always did, so a standard-definition disc collection will play too. Worth knowing this is a pre-HDMI player: it connects to a television by component, S-video, composite or SCART rather than a single digital cable. For a system built around music that is no drawback at all, and the digital audio outputs are the connections that matter here.

The original NAD remote is included, which is not a given on a player of this age and matters more on a changer than on a single-disc machine — disc skip and track navigation from your chair is most of the appeal.

There is also a 12V trigger input, so the player can be switched on and to standby automatically alongside a compatible NAD component.

Condition

Cosmetically this is in very good condition, and it has been thoroughly inspected and tested to confirm full functionality.

Worth noting on value: the T572 sold for around $520 USD when new in 2003 — comfortably north of $700 CAD (approx. US$495) at the time. NAD no longer builds a disc changer of any kind, and neither does anyone else.
