Description

A big, heavy early-nineties Pioneer receiver, made in Japan, with 125 watts per channel and selectable mains voltage from 110 to 240 volts, so it runs on household power almost anywhere in the world. It comes with a phono stage for your turntable and its original remote, through our Level 1 service and in good condition.

What it is

The VSX-9900S sat near the top of Pioneer’s receiver range in the early 1990s, and it is built like it. It is rated at 125 watts per channel into 8 ohms in stereo, its rating plate lists a 970-watt power draw, and at over 30 pounds it is built on the scale that kind of power calls for. That is enough to drive large floor-standing speakers with ease, or to bring less efficient speakers to life where a smaller receiver would run out of breath, with plenty held in reserve for the loudest passages. The front A and B speaker pairs connect through large screw-down binding posts that take bare wire, spades, pins or banana plugs; we recommend our own Radique Audio gold-plated banana plugs, and our Custom Speaker Cable Builder will make a pair to length, ready to plug in. They are rated for 4 to 16 ohm speakers, with an impedance selector on the back.

Bought for music, it is a straightforward, high-power stereo receiver with an unusually complete set of connections. There is a proper MM phono stage for your turntable, with its own phono level control and a ground post on the rear panel, plus CD, line and two tape loops (Tape 1/DAT and Tape 2). Six more audio inputs, labelled for video sources, take any line-level source you like, and one of them sits on the front panel for plugging in a portable player. A Direct button takes the tone controls out of the signal path when you want the straightest route to your speakers, with bass, treble and balance there when you want them.

It is also a receiver you can grow with. Front-channel pre-outs and power-amp inputs, linked by jumpers, let you add an external power amplifier or an equalizer later. There is a subwoofer output for a 2.1 system, A and B front speaker pairs switchable from the front panel, and a multi-room output that can play a second source through a pair of speakers in another room. On the back you will also find switched and unswitched AC outlets, a 30-preset AM/FM tuner with station naming, and the mains voltage selector itself, with settings for 110, 120–127, 220 and 240 volts. The FM de-emphasis and AM tuning step switch between the North American and European standards too, so the tuner works properly overseas. The original Pioneer remote is included, so volume and source changes happen from your chair.

🔌 Speaker Cable, Built on Our Own Bench

The speaker terminals here are five-way binding posts, so they take banana plugs or spade lugs and you have the run of the options. We hand-build speaker cable here in any length you need — choose the gauge and the terminations on our Custom Speaker Cable Builder. If you would rather terminate cable you already own, we make our own gold-plated banana plugs and spade connectors as well. 👉

🎚️ Gold Series RCA Interconnects

Our own Gold Series RCA Stereo Interconnect is a shielded, gold-plated stereo pair, in stock and ready to go. It is the cable that connects this to the rest of your system, and it is a straightforward upgrade on the free leads that come in the box with most equipment. 👉

📶 Add Bluetooth — The RA-Twin II, Built For Exactly This

The VSX-9900S was built before Bluetooth reached home stereo, and it does not need replacing to get it. Our own RA-Twin II adapter plugs into the CD or a line input on the back and streams from a phone, tablet or laptop — nothing modified inside, and it comes with a starter cable so it works out of the box. If you want it done properly, the Gold Series RX Bundle pairs the adapter with our shielded Gold Series 3.5 mm to Dual RCA cable for less than buying the two separately. 👉

✅ Good News for International Buyers

This unit is switchable between 120V and 220V, so it can be set to suit most markets worldwide. No step-down transformer is required — only an appropriate plug adapter.

✅ Buy With Confidence — The Radique Promise

Backed by Radique Audio’s Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty and our Perpetual Trade-Back Program. When you’re ready to move on, we’ll take it back. That’s the Radique difference.
