PSB Alpha S Surrounds Dispersive. Compact. Effective.
From PSB:
“Dispersive. Compact. Effective. At last, a dipolar surround speaker at an affordable price – the Alpha S. While many budget-minded speaker systems force tiny, direct-radiating speakers on consumers, the design team at PSB worked tirelessly to develop and offer a cost-minded surround speaker, so that our customers could enjoy the full benefits of high performance home theater.
The Alpha S uses the same basic design as Surround found in our higher-end series and creates a more pleasing listening environment by making smaller rooms seem larger through their controlled and incredibly wide dispersion. The Alpha S comes readily wall-mountable, for easy installation in any application.”
The Alpha S is a bipolar design that combines excellent diffusion with pinpoint placement of highly localized effects on surround channels. It is designed to be the primary surrounds in 5.1 home theatre systems and to be the additional rear surrounds in 7.1 surround systems.
Each Alpha S two-way speaker system has two baffle arrays aimed 90 degrees apart from each other, and each baffle array has a 3/4-inch aluminum dome tweeter and a 3-1/2-inch polypropylene cone with rubber surround woofer.
Like the rest of the Alpha Series, the Alpha S employs advanced construction techniques and new high performance drivers to bring a new level of performance to a speaker family. All Alphas use the same new anodized aluminum dome tweeter that provides extended and smooth high frequency response. The entire Alpha Series is timbre-matched to ensure smooth, natural, coherent performance with other Alpha models in a system — be it Alpha Ts in the front with an Alpha C center and Alpha Ss in the rear, or Alpha Cs across the front and Alpha Ss in the rear. Add a SubZero or SubSonic 5 subwoofer to any combination and you have a truly high performance home theatre and stereo system at an amazingly affordable price.
According to PSB founder and Chief Designer Paul Barton, the new Alphas take an important next step for today’s audio and video customers. “”These speakers,”” he says, “”will make a big difference for buyers both of a pair of speakers for music systems and the multiple speaker systems needed for home theatre. And these new Alphas fit into rooms as nicely as they do into budgets.”
The Alpha S cabinet has both structural, injection-molded front baffles with metal perforated grilles mounted on a six-sided, vinyl veneered — black or white texture — MDF cabinet sleeve. The Alpha S can be mounted directly on a wall — using the integral keyhole wall mounting plate — or with other wall brackets or positioned on a speaker stand. It includes five-way, gold-plated binding posts to ensure quality connections.

Paradigm Cinema 100 CT Satellites speakers, Gloss Black
A sealed two-way in a sculpted mineral-filled polymer cabinet — a 1-inch S-PAL satin-anodised aluminium dome, the same tweeter technology Paradigm uses much further up the range, over a 3.5-inch mineral-filled polypropylene mid/bass. The original removable shelf-stand bases are fitted and tilt the drivers up at a seated listener. 88 dB in room, 8 ohms, 15 to 100 watts. Built in Canada. Good cosmetic condition.
B&W Solid HCM1 Compact Satellite Speakers with Integrated Stands
A sealed two-way from B&W's Rock Solid series — a 4-inch fibre cone woofer and a polycarbonate dome in a polycarbonate cabinet chosen to kill resonance without adding mass. 90 dB, so modest amplification is enough, and magnetically shielded for desk use. Each speaker comes on its integrated stand bracket. Mark runs a pair as his office near-fields. Cosmetics good, 7 out of 10; tested.
KEF HTS1001 Uni-Q Satellite Speakers Black (Single)
KEF's Uni-Q array puts a 0.6-inch aluminium dome at the acoustic centre of the 3-inch mid-bass, so dispersion stays even off-axis and the far seat hears what the middle seat does. Sealed cast aluminium cabinet in high-gloss black, magnetically shielded, 120 Hz to 22 kHz, 86 dB, 10 to 100 watts. Terminals take bare wire or pin connectors. Very good cosmetic condition.
KEF HTS1001 Uni-Q Satellite Speakers Black Pair
KEF’s Uni-Q array puts a 0.6-inch aluminium dome at the acoustic centre of a 3-inch mid-bass cone, so the pair behaves as a single source and the tonal balance holds across the room rather than in one chair. Sealed cast aluminium enclosures, 120 Hz to 22 kHz, 86 dB, magnetically shielded. Very good cosmetic condition.
Mirage Omnisat OS 1PB-1 Omnipolar Satellite – Made in Canada
Both drivers fire upward into spoon-shaped reflectors Mirage calls OMNIGUIDEs, throwing sound through a full 360 degrees with a deliberate bias toward the front — which is what takes the sweet spot off a single chair. This is the original version at a genuine 7 lbs each, with a cast aluminium baffle and butyl rubber surrounds rather than foam. Built in Canada; condition very good.
Mirage Omnisat OS 1PB-1 Omnipolar Satellite (Pair) – Made in Canada
Both drivers fire upward into spoon-shaped OMNIGUIDE reflectors, giving 360-degree dispersion with a deliberate forward bias. 70 Hz to 20 kHz, 89 dB, cast aluminum woofer baffle and butyl surrounds rather than foam. These are the original 7 lb version; the later revisions come in under five. Very good condition.
PSB VisionSound VS300 Aluminum On-Wall Speaker
An on-wall speaker engineered as one rather than adapted into one. It shares the tweeter, terminals and crossover of PSB's VS400 floorstander, but the port was moved to the front so the cabinet can sit flat to a wall without the wall changing what it does — and a rear switch selects NORMAL or ON-WALL, filling the 400 to 500 Hz dip that hard mounting creates. Extruded aluminium, built in Pickering, Ontario. Graded Excellent or Very Good; the only thing separating the two is a single Tic Tac-sized hole at the extreme edge of one grille frame.
Polk Audio f/x 500i Bipole/Dipole Surrounds — Made in USA, Pair
A genuine mirror-imaged pair, labelled LC and RC, with two driver arrays set 45 degrees apart and a rear-panel switch that flips them between bipole and dipole — locatable effects on the wall behind you, a diffuse field on the side walls, same speakers either way. 19.4 lbs each, half again the weight of the FXi A6 that replaced them, and 2 dB more sensitive. Built in the United States, with keyhole mounts moulded into the cabinet. Very Good condition.
Insignia NS-SP211 2-Way Satellite Speakers, Shielded
A 3-inch woofer and a half-inch PEI dome in a sealed cabinet, 150 Hz to 20 kHz, 8 ohms, 80 watts peak. Keyhole slots are moulded into the back so they hang on a screw in any orientation without a bracket, and a detachable rubber base is included for shelf use. Magnetically shielded. Good cosmetic condition, tested.
