SVS PB12-NSD — The Ported Twelve That Built SVS’s Reputation
A large, genuinely deep-reaching ported twelve for home theatre and music, with the amplifier and cabinet volume to back it up.
Why This Model Matters
The PB12-NSD is the subwoofer that built SVS’s reputation: real low-frequency extension at a price that embarrassed everything near it. A 12-inch long-throw driver sits alongside a 4-inch flared port on the front baffle, in a 1-inch MDF window-braced cabinet tuned to roughly 20 Hz. That tuning is the whole point. A great many 12-inch subwoofers advertise deep bass and quietly run out of breath in the high twenties. This one does not, and it has the measurements to prove it.
The Sledge Amplifier
Power comes from SVS’s own Sledge STA-400D Class D plate amplifier — 400 watts continuous, 800 watts peak — running DSP limiting written specifically for this driver and this cabinet. In practice that means it protects itself gracefully rather than audibly coming apart when pushed. Independent measurement at Audioholics recorded an honest 100 dB or better at 20 Hz, above 105 dB from 25 Hz up, and total harmonic distortion under 10% even at the highest sweep level tested — composed mostly of the second and third harmonics, the least objectionable kind. Their testing placed it in the Bassoholic Large Room class: adequate headroom in rooms of 3,000 to 5,000 cubic feet. This is not a subwoofer that gets intimidated by a big space.
The Driver
The driver is considerably better than the original price suggested. An aluminum cone with composite dust cap rides on a powder-coated die-cast aluminum frame, with a rubber long-throw surround, a Nomex linear roll spider, and a 2-inch voice coil on a GSV former. The motor uses double-stacked ferrite magnets with dual shorting rings to control inductance, and a vented pole piece. A large internal window brace ties the top, bottom and both side panels together, and the enclosure is damping-lined throughout.
Performance
For films it delivers weight and depth without the loose overhang that gave ported subwoofers their old reputation. For music it stays tight and pitch-defined, tracking bass lines rather than smearing them. It works equally well as the foundation of a home theatre or filling in the bottom octave under a stereo pair.
Radique-Fitted Enhancements
We have fitted this example with extremely heavy-duty angle brackets underneath, lifting the cabinet an additional three inches off the floor, along with Radique Audio High Density Felt pads in our signature Magenta at the contact points. Together they decouple the cabinet from the floor, protect the surface beneath it, and stop the subwoofer creeping during heavy passages — worth having on a box this heavy, which will otherwise walk itself across a hardwood floor given enough time and enough movie.
Condition
Cosmetically this example is graded Good. There is some light marking on the top surface, consistent with items having been set down on it over the years — the wear a subwoofer collects precisely because it sits at floor level and makes such a convenient shelf. The remaining panels present well. The original steel mesh grille is not included; SVS’s curved grille was an unusually substantial piece and is not easily sourced, though the aluminum cone and deeply flared port make for a purposeful front baffle uncovered.
Radique’s Take
A good many subwoofers come through the shop in a year. This is one of the two or three we would have kept.
What It Costs to Replace Today
Worth knowing what this costs to replace. The current entry-level ported twelve in the SVS range, the PB-1000 Pro, lists at $1,475.00 CAD (approx. US$1,045) — and is rated at 325 watts RMS in a 42.5 lb cabinet. The one in front of you makes 400 watts continuous in a cabinet of 66 lbs. The newer model gains DSP, a smartphone app and a few hertz of extension; it does not gain power, and it does not gain cabinet volume.
Sixty-six pounds of braced MDF and motor assembly is exactly why it stays planted while it works. It is also why moving it is a two-person job, and why the second person deserves to be told that in advance.
Condition and Service
Tested and confirmed performing to standard, then inspected and photographed in-house. For a buyer who wants genuine sub-20 Hz capability rather than the suggestion of it, this remains one of the strongest values in used home theatre.

Infinity Minuette MPS Passive Subwoofer – Dual 6.5″, Front-Ported
A passive subwoofer, which means no power cord, no built-in amplifier and no electronic crossover to fail. Two 6.5-inch polypropylene woofers in a bandpass box, 40 to 150Hz, wired high-level — your amplifier's front outputs go in, your main speakers come off the pass-through, and the sub keeps everything below about 150Hz. Twenty-eight pounds of moulded composite. Very good condition.
LG SH96TA-W Passive Subwoofer, Front-Firing, Front-Ported, Black
The passive subwoofer that shipped with LG's SH96TA home-theatre system — forward-firing driver and a front port, so it can back onto a wall or sit inside a cabinet without upsetting the tuning. It is a 3-ohm load and needs a receiver with a dedicated passive-subwoofer output; it should not go on ordinary speaker terminals. No power cord, no plate amp to age out. Good cosmetic condition.

Polk Audio PSW350 10″ Front-Firing Powered Subwoofer 260W
A 10-inch front-firing Dynamic Balance woofer on a 100-watt RMS amplifier — 260 watts dynamic — in a dual-rear-ported cabinet good for 25 to 180 Hz. Speaker-level in and out, stereo line inputs and an unfiltered LFE jack, with a variable 60 to 160 Hz low-pass and a phase switch. 37 lbs, black matte. Very good cosmetic condition.
Yamaha YST-SW105 Active Servo Subwoofer — Compact 100W
An 8-inch front-firing paper cone on Yamaha's Advanced Active Servo amplifier — 100 watts into 5 ohms, down to 30 Hz, from a cabinet small enough to tuck beside a bookshelf pair. Continuously variable high-cut from 50 to 150 Hz, a Music/Movie voicing switch, RCA and speaker-level inputs plus full-range pass-through outputs. Very good condition.
Yamaha SW-3 Active Servo Subwoofer — 10″ Woofer | Air Woofer Tec
Yamaha’s Active Servo Technology couples a negative-impedance drive amplifier to a Helmholtz resonator port — the Air Woofer opening — so the amplifier corrects the driver’s motion as it works. 100 watts into a 25 cm cone, rated down to 25 Hz, with a continuously variable 50–150 Hz high-cut at 24 dB per octave. Speaker-level and line inputs both. Very good condition.
JVC SX-PW33 Slim Tower Subwoofer — 6.5in, 100W, High-Pass Out
A tall, narrow bass column meant to stand beside a cabinet rather than in front of it — 8.25 inches across the front and unusually deep at 17, which is the trade: the depth buys back the internal volume the narrow baffle gives away, so a 6.5 inch woofer is properly loaded in a strip of floor barely wider than a hardcover book. Driven by an integrated 100 watt amplifier, with speaker-level inputs and high-pass outputs so it works with an amplifier that has no subwoofer output at all. Good condition.
