Description

Technics SA-400 Stereo Receiver 45WPC, Made in Japan

The Technics SA-400 is a late-1970s Japanese-made FM/AM stereo receiver rated at 45 watts per channel into 8 ohms, combining classic silver-face styling with clean, low-distortion power and an excellent tuner section.

Offered from around 1978–1979, the SA-400 sits in the sweet spot of Technics’ lineup, powerful enough to drive a wide range of vintage and modern speakers while remaining compact and easy to place. This unit has undergone our Level One service and testing which should ensure many more years of reliable performance ahead, and presents in very good cosmetic condition with only light wear consistent with careful use. The brushed aluminum faceplate, matching knobs, and classic dial with signal and center-tune meters give it a timeless look that pairs well with both period-correct and contemporary systems.

Technically, the SA-400 delivers 45 watts per channel (minimum RMS, both channels driven, 8 ohms, 20–20,000 Hz) with only 0.04% total harmonic distortion, thanks to a pure-complementary OCL power amp and robust power supply. The tuner section uses a MOS FET front end, 3-gang FM tuning capacitor, and multi-stage IF with flat group delay ceramic filters, giving strong sensitivity and selectivity for FM listening. Inputs include phono (MM), AUX/line, and two tape monitor loops, making it easy to integrate a turntable, streamer, CD player, and tape deck or external processor; the dual tape loops can also be used for adding a graphic equalizer or other outboard signal processors.

Sonically, the SA-400 is known for a clean, slightly warm presentation with good bass control and smooth highs, making it a strong match for classic bookshelf and floorstanding speakers from the same era. High and low filters, loudness contour, and well-voiced bass and treble controls allow useful tailoring of the sound without veering into harshness or muddiness. Speaker outputs support two pairs (A/B) with a 4–16 ohm load range, so it can comfortably run a single main pair or switch between two rooms of speakers.
