What it is
Get the classic Technics look and performance without the high price tag. The Technics SL-220 is a reliable, belt-drive workhorse: a two-speed, belt-driven turntable system with a static-balanced S-type tonearm, a clear strobe, separate pitch controls, and auto-return. While often overshadowed by its direct-drive cousins, the SL-220 is a “sleeper” hit among vintage enthusiasts for its excellent S-shaped tonearm and stable DC servo motor.
The SL-220 uses a frequency generator (FG) servo DC motor, a technology borrowed from higher-end models to monitor and correct speed instantly. The result is low wow and flutter, 0.045%, that rivals many direct-drive decks, on a 304 mm die-cast aluminum platter. The static-balanced S-shaped tonearm provides excellent tracking and is gentle on your vinyl.
It is easy to live with. The speed, pitch and cut controls are laid out in the classic Technics arrangement on the front panel, and the illuminated strobe mirror lets you see the speed is right. At the end of the record, the auto-return mechanism lifts the arm and returns it to its rest. The universal SME-type headshell connection makes swapping or upgrading the cartridge easy.
The SL-220 is a fantastic entry point into the world of vintage Technics. It delivers 90% of the performance of the more expensive SL-2000/3000 series at a fraction of the cost.
