The Sherwood S-8250 CP is a handsome vintage solid-state stereo receiver from Sherwood’s early-1980s Certified Performance series — a range in which Sherwood guaranteed and printed the actual measured performance specifications of every unit, giving buyers a level of assurance few competitors could match.

Twenty-five watts per channel into 8 ohms is a modest but honest figure that goes a long way in practice, especially when driving efficient bookshelf or standmount speakers in a small to medium-sized room. The S-8250 CP has a warm, smooth analog presentation typical of the era — neither bright nor aggressive — and is well suited to vinyl listening, FM radio, and tape playback alike. The phono stage is fully capable and ready for use with any standard moving-magnet cartridge.

The front panel is classic early-1980s silver styling at its best: a wide brushed-aluminum faceplate flanked by walnut-grain side panels, a large backlit analog tuning dial with green indicator lights and a weighted flywheel tuning knob, and a full suite of discrete controls including separate Bass, Treble, Balance, and Volume knobs. A front-panel noise filter and Mute/Mono mode switch are welcome practical additions. The loudness contour switch and A/B speaker selector round out a well-considered feature set.

This unit has undergone our Level Two service and testing — including component checks and replacements as needed, bias and DC offset adjustment, and thorough deoxidation of all controls — and should ensure many more years of reliable performance ahead.
