Rotel RB-1050 Stereo Power Amplifier — 70 Watts Per Channel, Toroidal Transformer, Signal Output Link, New Five-Way Binding Posts

A compact, seriously overbuilt Rotel power amplifier with a toroidal supply, freshly serviced on our bench and fitted with brand-new upgraded five-way binding posts.

The 1000 Series and the Toroidal Supply

The RB-1050 belongs to Rotel’s well-regarded 1000 series, and it is a good deal more amplifier than its modest 70 watts per channel suggests. Rotel wound its own toroidal transformers in-house, and the one sitting in this chassis is generously sized for the rating — enough that a reviewer running the amplifier at home noticed the room lights dim on switch-on. Large heat sinks and discrete output devices back it up. The published numbers reflect the engineering: a damping factor of 500 into 8 ohms, a 116 dB signal-to-noise ratio, distortion held under 0.03 percent from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and frequency response flat within 1 dB from 10 Hz all the way to 100 kHz. A damping figure of 500 is the specification to notice here, because it is what gives a 70-watt amplifier genuine grip on a difficult woofer.

What the Reviewer Measured

Reviewing the RB-1050 for Enjoy the Music.com, Bill Roberts measured output comfortably 3 to 4 dB above the rated power, particularly in the bass, and scored the amplifier 97 out of 100 for fit and finish and a perfect 100 for self noise. He compared it favourably against the Adcom GFA-555, GFA-545 and GFA-535 he kept on hand for reference, and likened its character to a mint Dynaco ST70 with rather more power and dynamics on tap. His summary was that it comes surprisingly close to reference-grade amplification at a small fraction of the cost.

The Rear Panel and Signal Output Link

What makes the RB-1050 unusually easy to live with is the rear panel. Alongside the RCA inputs sits a second pair of RCA jacks marked Signal Output Link — a buffered pass-through that sends the incoming signal straight back out again. That single feature solves a lot of problems: run a powered subwoofer from it, chain a second amplifier for another room, or bi-amp a pair of speakers, all without a splitter or a second set of preamp outputs. A three-position mode switch then decides how the amplifier wakes up, offering manual operation, 12-volt trigger with input and output jacks, or fully automatic turn-on by signal sensing, dropping back to standby after five minutes of silence. Independent front-panel level controls for each channel let you match this amplifier’s gain to whatever else is in the chain.

Protection and Indicators

Protection is thorough and, importantly, entirely user-resettable. Each channel has its own clipping indicator on the front panel, a protection circuit guards the outputs, and the rear panel carries a 10-amp resettable AC breaker rather than a fuse — so there is nothing to hunt for in a drawer if it ever trips. The power cord is detachable.

Level 1 Service and New Binding Posts

This example has undergone our Level 1 service and testing, which should ensure many more years of reliable performance ahead. Beyond that, the speaker terminals have been replaced with brand-new upgraded five-way binding posts in a gold finish — a substantial improvement over the originals, accepting banana plugs, spades, pins or bare wire, and taking a proper torque so that a heavy speaker cable stays put and stays tight.

Condition

Cosmetically this example is in Very Good condition, presenting well throughout with only light traces of careful use.

Who This Suits

For anyone building a compact two-channel system, adding real amplification to a receiver’s front channels, or feeding a second zone or a subwoofer from the same source, the RB-1050 is a strong choice: toroidal power, a damping factor most amplifiers at any price would be pleased to publish, fresh service, and new binding posts ready for whatever cable you want to run. Available for pickup in Kanata, or shipped across Canada and internationally — we have sent equipment to fifteen countries in the past year, each piece packed in-house in 275 lb test double-wall boxes. 🔌 Speaker Cable, Built on Our Own Bench

The speaker terminals here are five-way binding posts, so they take banana plugs or spade lugs and you have the run of the options. We hand-build speaker cable here in any length you need — choose the gauge and the terminations on our Custom Speaker Cable Builder. If you would rather terminate cable you already own, we make our own gold-plated banana plugs and spade connectors as well. 👉

🎚️ Gold Series RCA Interconnects

Our own Gold Series RCA Stereo Interconnect is a shielded, gold-plated stereo pair, in stock and ready to go. It is the cable that connects this to the rest of your system, and it is a straightforward upgrade on the free leads that come in the box with most equipment. 👉

⚠️ Important Information for International Buyers

This unit is configured for North American 110/120V power. Buyers outside North America will require a step-down transformer and appropriate plug adapter.
