Definitive Technology BP-10 Bipolar Towers — American-Built, Four Drivers a Side, Bass to 20 Hz

A pair of full-range bipolar floor-standing towers, built in Baltimore, that throw a wide, enveloping soundstage for music and home theatre while sitting close enough to the wall to live in a real room.

What Bipolar Actually Does

The BP-10 is a bipolar design, which means each tower holds two complete two-way systems: one facing forward in the conventional way, and a second facing directly backward. Both radiate the full frequency range in phase with one another. That last detail is the whole point. Dipolar panel speakers, the electrostatics and planars this design was aimed at, radiate front and rear out of phase, so their bass outputs partially cancel and the speaker has to be pulled several feet into the room to work at all. Because the BP-10 radiates in phase, the front and rear bass outputs reinforce each other instead, and the speaker is happiest roughly eight to twelve inches out from the wall. The result is the spacious, three-dimensional presentation people buy panel speakers for, without surrendering the corner of the room, the bass extension or the efficiency.

The Driver Array

Each tower carries four drivers: two 6-1/2 inch bass and midrange units with cast magnesium baskets, mineral-filled homopolymer cones and butyl rubber surrounds, paired with two 1 inch dual-chamber aperiodic fabric dome tweeters. The dual chamber arrangement, one cavity behind the dome and a second behind the magnet structure joined through the pole piece, lowers the tweeter’s resonant frequency and extends its response. Voice coils are aluminum, wound with high-temperature wire and ferro-fluid damped. The two woofers share a common enclosure vented by a single ducted port at the base of the rear panel, and the crossover is a fourth-order Linkwitz-Riley network, chosen for even response through the crossover region and for its phase and transient behaviour. The cabinet is a slender column wrapped in a stretched black cloth sleeve across all four faces, with a wood base and top plate in high-gloss black lacquer.

What the Measurements Show

The independent laboratory measurements are what make this speaker worth seeking out. Composite frequency response measured within plus or minus 2 dB from 1,000 Hz to 20,000 Hz, and the bass response held within plus or minus 2 dB from 40 Hz all the way to 800 Hz. Impedance never fell below 4 ohms, and the phase angle stayed under 22 degrees across the entire 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz band. For anyone pairing these with a vintage receiver or integrated, that combination matters more than any single number on the box: a load that stays benign in both magnitude and phase is an easy load, and easy loads are what let modest amplifiers sound composed rather than strained. Driven with single-cycle high-power pulses at 1,000 and 10,000 Hz, the test amplifier itself clipped, at 850 and 1,100 watts respectively, before the drivers ran out of headroom.

Definitive Technology built its name on bipolar towers, and the BP-10 is the model that established the non-powered BP line and carried the company’s reputation into mainstream audio. It sold for $1,100 USD a pair when new.

Condition

Cosmetically these are graded Good, and the grade is driven by one thing: the high-gloss end caps. Gloss black lacquer is unforgiving over three decades, and these carry scuffs and a few small chips on the caps. From a normal seated listening distance the pair presents very well indeed. The cloth sleeves, which are the large visible surface on a speaker of this design, are in good order.

A genuinely capable American-built bipolar pair that images like a panel speaker and places like a box, and one of the more interesting floor-standers to come out of the 1990s.
