A pair of PSB 50 MkII two-way monitors in black ash, built in Canada.

What they are

Bigger than “bookshelf” suggests. These stand twenty-five inches tall and weigh thirty pounds each, with heavy internal bracing and a cabinet that does not talk back at you.

The eight-inch polypropylene woofer sits in a cast basket rather than a stamped frame. That is not a detail PSB had to spend money on at this price, and they spent it anyway. Above it, a one-inch textile dome handles the top end with the unforced quality fabric domes do well — detailed without ever turning bright or brittle.

What you get for all that is a speaker that plays considerably bigger than its footprint and goes genuinely low. Thirty-five hertz is real bass extension, and at 90 dB sensitivity it does not demand an expensive amplifier to get there. These suit a medium to large room and reward being given a little space from the wall behind them.

Made in Canada

PSB is the company Paul Barton built, and these were made in Canada. The voicing philosophy behind them — measure properly, then listen properly — is audible in speakers of this vintage, and it is why the name still carries weight with Canadian buyers who grew up on it. An eight-inch two-way with cast baskets is not a build anyone offers at this kind of money now.

The replaced woofer

One woofer on this pair has been replaced. The replacement is a genuine PSB driver, ordered direct from PSB in 2004 and supplied by them as the correct part for this exact model — not a generic substitute dropped into the hole. It carries PSB’s own service label, part M5212R/INT, and it matches its partner.

We would rather state that plainly than have anyone discover it. A factory part fitted twenty years ago is a repair done properly, not a compromise.

Condition

We have graded this pair Good, and we don’t hand that rating out casually. The reason for the grade is light marking on one cabinet in the area around the woofer. It is entirely hidden with the grilles in place and invisible in normal use, and a less strict grade would have been defensible. We would rather you find the speaker better than the description than the other way round.

Everything has been thoroughly inspected and tested to confirm full functionality.
