Description

A pair of the famous Dynaco A-35 floor-standing loudspeakers, rebuilt in our shop with brand-new cabinets in genuine Ottawa Valley cherrywood veneer, expertly applied by hand, serviced, and fitted with upgraded five-way binding posts.

Most fifty-year-old loudspeakers wear their age on the outside. Vinyl woodgrain wrap lifts at the corners, veneer edges scuff white, and cabinets that once looked like furniture end up looking like something out of a basement. These do not have that problem, because the cabinets are new work.

Why cherrywood

Cherry is among the most prized hardwoods in North American furniture making, and it is the only wood we use for this. Its grain is warm and close, and unlike almost anything else it improves with time — Ottawa Valley cherry finished naturally, without harsh chemicals, gradually darkens and deepens over the years into a rich, lustrous patina. A cherry cabinet looks better a decade from now than the day it leaves us. Because the grain is natural it varies from panel to panel, which is what makes each pair its own.

The finishing

The veneer is book-matched, so the grain runs continuously across the cabinet rather than stopping dead at every corner. It is sanded to a silky 320-grit smoothness before a traditional boiled linseed oil finish is hand-applied and left to cure fully, drawing the depth of the grain out from within the wood rather than laying colour on top of it. A final coat of beeswax polish gives a warm, subtle lustre and lasting protection. No stains, no polyurethane, no synthetics — made with care rather than chemicals. This is furniture-grade work, and it is the same process we use on our own cabinets.

What is inside them

Dynaco was founded in Philadelphia in 1955 and spent two decades doing what the industry has never found easy: building genuinely high-quality components that ordinary people could afford. For their loudspeakers they went to Denmark, and the Danish-built A-series is the reason the name still carries weight with people who know.

The A-35 is the one enthusiasts of the marque tend to argue for. It followed the well-loved A-25 and kept both of its drivers, but housed them in a larger and considerably more complex enclosure with a redesigned crossover. The result has deeper, better-defined bass and more dynamic capability than its predecessor — controlled rather than boomy, and noticeably more articulate. A good many people who know the range well consider it the best speaker Dynaco ever built.

It is a two-way design. A soft hemispheric tweeter handles the top with unusually wide dispersion, crossing over at 1200 hertz to an extended-excursion ten-inch woofer. That woofer deserves a moment: it uses a rubber surround rather than foam. Foam surrounds crumble with age, and a great many vintage speakers of this era now need reconing because of it. Rubber does not, which is a large part of why these still perform as they should and why they will keep doing so.

The enclosure is cleverer than it looks. Two sealed chambers sit inside, separated by a damped vent, so that as frequencies drop the effective volume of the cabinet grows. It is a neat piece of engineering that gives the low end genuine weight without the one-note thump that afflicts many sealed designs. On the rear panel a selector lets you lift or soften the midrange and treble to suit your room, which earns its keep if you have a lot of glass or a lot of carpet.

They are happy on anything from 20 to 60 watts per channel, which puts a great many vintage receivers and modern integrated amplifiers squarely in range.

The sound is warm and unhurried, with a natural tonality and real depth — rich through the midrange, sweet at the top. This is a speaker that rewards long listening rather than one that shows off, and the people who love these love them for exactly that.

The other upgrade

We have replaced the original spring-clip connections with five-way binding posts, so you can use bare wire, spades, or banana plugs, and you are no longer working around a connector designed in 1972.

Condition

The cabinets are new work, finished throughout, and both speakers have been through our service bench and perform as they should.

Two things to be plain about before you buy. The grilles are not with them. These are sold as bare cabinets, and original A-35 grille frames are not easy to find second-hand, so if you were counting on running them covered you should know that now rather than later. For what it is worth, we would run a pair finished like this uncovered anyway — but that is a preference, not an answer to a missing part.

The second is that the cabinets are our own work rather than a restoration to factory specification, so a collector after original Danish walnut should know that going in. What this is instead is a pair of A-35s in cabinets built to outlast the drivers.

One of the great loudspeakers of the era, in cabinets that will look better in ten years than they do today.
