Paradigm Monitor 7 v2 Towers – Light Cherry, Made in Canada

A slim three-driver tower from Paradigm’s Mississauga years, in the uncommon Light Cherry finish.

What it is

The Monitor 7 v2 is a two-and-a-half-way design, and that half is the interesting part. Two 165 mm bass drivers sit below a 25 mm titanium dome, but they are not doing the same job. Both carry the bass. Only the upper one continues into the midrange — the lower driver is rolled off at 400 Hz by a second-order network and left to work the bottom end alone.

The reason to build a speaker this way is that it buys the bass output of two woofers without the penalty that two full-range woofers bring, where the pair start to interfere with one another through the midrange and the image goes soft. Handing the midrange to one driver keeps it coherent. Adding the second driver underneath it keeps the low end from running out of air. It is a more considered arrangement than a simple three-way and it is the reason a cabinet this narrow reaches 33 Hz.

The drivers themselves are the good Paradigm hardware of the period. The tweeter is a pure-titanium dome and former, ferrofluid-damped and cooled. Both bass drivers use injection-moulded co-polymer polypropylene cones on diecast chassis, with Apical formers. The crossover is third-order electro-acoustic at 2 kHz to the tweeter. The port is a quasi-third-order resistive design rather than a plain tube.

Easy to drive, and bi-wireable

At 93 dB room sensitivity these are not fussy about amplification. Paradigm quotes a usable range from 15 watts up to 175, which means a modest integrated will drive them properly and a large amplifier will not embarrass them. The terminals are set up for bi-wiring if you want to run them that way.

The finish

Light Cherry was one of three finishes Paradigm offered on this series alongside Dark Cherry and Black Ash, and it is far and away the least common of them on the used market. It is a warmer, lighter look than the black ash most of these were sold in, and on a cabinet only 7 5/8 inches wide it reads as furniture rather than as audio equipment.

Very good. The cabinets present well and the pair are working properly.
