Tannoy Mercury FR Custom Compact Speakers – Dark Oak, Pair

A pair of compact two-way Tannoy speakers from the limited Custom edition of Tannoy’s Mercury F-series, in very good condition, with a wall bracket built into the back of each cabinet.

What they are

The Mercury FR was the smallest model in Tannoy’s Mercury F-series. Tannoy designed it as a rear or surround speaker, and it works just as well as a front stereo pair wherever space is tight: a desk, a kitchen, a bedroom or a small study. The Custom edition was Tannoy’s step-up version of the range, and the badge on the back of each cabinet reads “Limited Edition Audiophile Upgrade”.

Each speaker pairs a 1″ woven polyester dome tweeter, layer-damped and driven by a shielded neodymium magnet, with a 4″ multi-fibre coated paper cone. A fourth-order Linkwitz-Riley crossover hands over between them at 2.9 kHz. The 2.6-litre cabinet is rear-ported, cross-braced inside, and built on a 15 mm MDF front baffle for rigidity.

For the Custom edition, Tannoy describes an upgraded crossover, including a polypropylene capacitor in the tweeter feed, and internal wiring replaced with Van den Hul silver-plated cable.

A bracket pre-fitted to the back of each cabinet lets them hang flat against a wall, in portrait or landscape. At 86 dB and 8 ohms, rated for amplifiers from 10 to 60 watts, they are an easy match for a modest receiver. Bass is rated to 59 Hz, so for full-range music in a larger room they are happiest alongside a subwoofer; as surrounds, or as a compact pair for close listening, they need nothing else.

Around the back, red and black spring-clip terminals in a recessed cup take bare wire or pin connectors. Condition

Very good, and free of significant marks. The Dark Oak cabinets, drivers and Tannoy badges all present well, as the photographs show. Both black cloth grilles are included.
