How Klipsch Rated It

Start with the power rating, because Klipsch quoted it in a way almost nobody else does. The RPW-10 is rated at 200 watts continuous under the FTC standard, at less than 2 percent distortion, with 420 watts of dynamic power on top. That first number is the one that matters and the one most manufacturers quietly avoid: a continuous rating measured to a published standard is a promise about what the amplifier does all evening, not what it manages for a fraction of a second on a test bench. Sitting beside a shelf of subwoofers advertising peak figures alone, a 200 watt FTC continuous rating is a different kind of claim.

The BASH Amplifier

The amplifier itself is a BASH digital hybrid, and the design is genuinely clever rather than a marketing name. A conventional class-AB amplifier sounds clean but wastes most of its power as heat, because the supply rails sit at full voltage whether the music needs them or not. A switching amplifier is efficient but harder to make sound good. BASH keeps a linear output stage and puts a switching supply behind it that tracks the audio signal, raising and lowering the rail voltage to stay just above what the music is asking for. The result is class-AB behaviour at close to switching efficiency, which is how a cabinet this size carries a 200 watt continuous amplifier without needing a heatsink the size of the box.

Connections

The connection panel is the reason to want this particular subwoofer, and it is the thing the specification list buries at the bottom. Alongside the usual line-level RCA inputs, the RPW-10 has high-level speaker binding posts going in and a second set passing straight back out. That means it connects to an amplifier that has no subwoofer output whatsoever, which describes almost every integrated amplifier and receiver built before home theatre existed. You run speaker cable from the amplifier to the subwoofer, and another run from the subwoofer out to your main speakers. A vintage integrated with a single pair of speaker terminals can have a subwoofer added without a preamp output, without a splitter, and without giving anything up.

Placement

Placement is unusually forgiving. The port is a slot firing from the front rather than a tube out of the back, so the cabinet can go tight against a wall or inside a media unit without the port choking or chuffing, which is exactly the situation that makes most ported subwoofers unhappy. Controls are the ones you actually use: volume, a variable low-pass to set the handover to your main speakers, a phase switch for when the subwoofer and the mains are fighting each other, and auto power so it wakes on signal and sleeps on its own.
