Made in Canada, the Energy Connoisseur C-8 is a flagship 3-way vented tower from Energy Speaker Systems — a Toronto-founded company whose engineering legacy rivals that of any speaker manufacturer in the country, and whose Connoisseur series represented the pinnacle of their consumer floorstanding range.
The C-8 is a substantial, serious loudspeaker. The cabinet is a tapered, front-ported 3-way vented design housing an aluminium dome tweeter with cloth suspension, flanked by two 20.3cm injection-moulded aluminium/polypropylene woofers with rubber surrounds and polypropylene diaphragms — driver materials that Energy chose for their stiffness-to-mass ratio and long-term stability. The crossover is set at 1,800 Hz, and the combination of driver quality, cabinet bracing, and Energy’s decades of NRC-informed acoustic research produces the smooth, extended, and dynamically capable performance that earned the C-8 a 4.8 out of 5 average rating across 75 user reviews on AudioReview — an exceptional result for a floorstanding speaker at any price.
At 93 dB room efficiency and a nominal 8-ohm impedance (4.5-ohm minimum), the C-8 is an easy and rewarding load for any quality amplifier or receiver from 30 watts upward — yet its 300-watt RMS power handling means it will scale gracefully with high-powered amplification in larger rooms. Frequency response extends to 28 Hz (-3 dB), giving these towers genuine full-range capability that eliminates the need for a subwoofer in most listening rooms. The high-gloss black finish is striking and well-executed, and at 57 lbs each these are solidly, impressively built.
