What it is

The Studio CC v2 comes from Paradigm’s Reference line in the late nineties, and the first thing anyone notices about it is the weight. Thirty-two pounds is not what a center channel normally weighs. That mass is cabinet bracing and driver hardware, and it is the reason this one behaves like a proper loudspeaker rather than like the afterthought most centers turn out to be.

It will more than hold its own against the vast majority of quality mains — which is the real test of a center, because a center that cannot keep up with the speakers on either side of it announces itself every time a voice pans across the front stage. This one delivers crystal-clear movie dialogue and audiophile-grade musicality with equal aplomb.

The design

Three drivers in a two-way arrangement: two 170 mm mica-polymer cones flanking a 25 mm pure-aluminum dome, with the crossover handing over at 1.5 kHz on a fourth-order electro-acoustic slope.

The hardware is the good Paradigm engineering of the period. The tweeter is a PAL pure-aluminum dome on a diecast heatsink chassis, ferrofluid cooled. The mid-bass drivers use MLP mica-polymer cones on AVS diecast heatsink chassis with 25 mm voice coils — diecast rather than stamped, which is what keeps a driver’s geometry honest when it is working hard.

It is video shielded, so it will sit on or beside a television without complaint, and the terminals are dual pairs of five-way binding posts, so bi-wiring is there if you want it.

At 90 dB room sensitivity it is easy to drive, with a usable range from 15 watts to 175.

Condition

Good, and honestly described.

There are a couple of small marks on the top surface. The fabric side panels look a little worn — not torn or damaged, but showing their age in the way cloth does after twenty-odd years.

Neither affects how it works or how it sounds. It still presents well, and it is still a beast of a center channel.

A serious center channel with some honest wear, at a price that reflects it.
