Sound Dynamics 10S Vintage Canadian Floor Speakers
Designed in Canada.
A pair of vintage Sound Dynamics 10S two-way floor-standing loudspeakers in very good cosmetic condition — genuinely impressive presentation for a model of this vintage, and a properly Canadian-engineered piece of mid-1980s hi-fi history offered ready to play.
Sound Dynamics was the high-value performance brand of Audio Products International of Toronto — the same Canadian engineering house behind Mirage, Energy, and (later) Athena Technologies. The 10S was one of the brand’s best-loved models, a substantial 2-way floorstander built around a 10-inch woofer crossed in first-order to a horn-loaded dome tweeter. It is a design philosophy more closely associated with Cerwin-Vega than with API’s smaller monitors — high efficiency, big-bass output, and the kind of dynamic effortlessness that makes rock, blues, and large-scale orchestral material come alive in ways that smaller bookshelves simply cannot match.
The 10-inch woofer delivers genuinely deep bass for a passive design of this size, with a published –3 dB lower limit of 30 Hz — the kind of bass extension most modern floorstanders can only achieve with built-in powered subwoofers and DSP. The horn-loaded tweeter, with its tilt-screw level control, is the secret to the 10S’s exceptionally high sensitivity (typically measured at 96–98 dB / 1 W / 1 m by experienced reviewers), making these speakers absurdly easy to drive — a 20-watt vintage receiver will fill a large room comfortably, and a quality 50-watt integrated will bring out their full dynamic range. The horn voicing keeps the high frequencies clear and present without harshness, and pairs particularly well with warmer-sounding vintage receivers from Pioneer, Marantz, NAD, and Sansui.
The cabinets are substantial, well-braced, front-ported designs in a black vinyl woodgrain finish, with the original removable full-face cloth grilles. The drivers and grilles are in very good cosmetic condition for a model now approximately 40 years old — uncommon in the vintage market and a real pleasure to find. The rear panel features a tweeter level control for fine-tuning room balance, allowing the high-frequency presentation to be matched to the listening space and to the warmth of the partnering amplifier.
These speakers have been bench-tested and confirmed working: both woofers move freely with proper foam surround integrity, both tweeters produce clean output across the level-control range, and both cabinets are tight, free of buzzes and rattles. A genuinely capable, high-efficiency vintage Canadian floorstander ready for many more years of service in a vintage stereo, second system, or rec-room rig.
