Technics SL-PD8 — Five-Disc Carousel with MASH DAC and Original Remote

The Carousel

Five discs on a rotary carousel, with Technics’ quick disc rotation system so you are not waiting through a long mechanical shuffle between selections. Programming is done through a phone-style ten-key pad rather than the endless skip-button pressing most changers of the era demanded, with a disc location display and ID scan to find what you want quickly.

Playback Modes

The playback modes are where these developed a following. Alongside the usual continue, repeat, random and program options is Spiral play, which samples across all five loaded discs rather than working through them one at a time. Owners describe leaving it running for hours, and it is the feature people specifically mention when they talk about why they kept theirs.

Why This One

Two things make this one worth having over the many similar changers floating around. It plays CD-Rs, which a great many players of this period will not — so your own compilations and burned discs work properly rather than producing an error. And the optical digital output means the player’s own conversion is entirely bypassable: run it into a modern DAC, an AV receiver or a streamer’s digital input and the changer becomes a pure transport, feeding five discs to whatever converter you prefer. For anyone with a decent outboard DAC, that turns a modest CD changer into something considerably better than its price suggests.

The MASH Converter

Internally it uses Technics’ MASH 1-bit converter, and the analogue outputs are perfectly pleasant on their own if you would rather keep it simple.

The Original Remote

The original remote is included, which is worth stating plainly because most of these have long since lost theirs. Operating a five-disc changer without a remote is a good deal less pleasant than the designers intended.

Condition
