Pioneer SX-3600 in a One-of-a-Kind Custom Cherry Cabinet

The Pioneer SX-3600 is one of the most rewarding mid-power stereo receivers of the early 1980s. We’ve taken a fully tested, Level One serviced SX-3600 and lifted its original cabinet from its faux-walnut vinyl wrap into furniture-grade Ottawa Valley cherry veneer — real cherry, hand-finished in oil and beeswax to bring out warm reds and tight grain figure. The result is a true statement piece for any vintage rig.

Sound and Performance

30 watts per channel into 8 ohms (RMS) — modest on paper, plenty in practice. The SX-3600’s direct-coupled output stage delivers the warm, musical Pioneer voice that defined the era: tight bass, sweet midrange, and a smooth, slightly forward top end. It pairs beautifully with vintage bookshelf and floorstanding speakers in any normal-sized room.

The Iconic Fluoroscan Display

Pioneer’s blue Fluoroscan power meters with peak-hold give this receiver its unmistakable nighttime glow. Paired with the analog FM dial and center-channel tuning meter, the SX-3600 looks as good as it sounds.

Custom Ottawa Cherry Cabinet

This receiver wears its original Pioneer cabinet, refinished in-house at Radique Audio: the factory vinyl wrap stripped away and the sides and top re-veneered in real Ottawa Valley cherry, hand-finished with boiled linseed oil and beeswax. The cherry tones deepen with age into a rich reddish-amber that complements vintage speakers, turntables, and traditional furniture. No two of our cherry cabinets are exactly alike — each one is unique.
